    Default job background
    Description

The National Health Service (NHS) is dedicated to fostering a culture that is positive, compassionate, and inclusive.

We prioritize the physical and mental health and wellbeing of our colleagues, aligning with our values as outlined in the NHS Constitution. This commitment enables us to be an Employer of Choice while supporting our colleagues in delivering high-quality services for patients and communities.

As a flexible employer, we aim to accommodate individual needs by exploring flexible working arrangements, including job sharing, part-time, hybrid, or other flexible patterns. Although this role has a designated 'home' office base, we remain committed to supporting flexibility around workplace locations.

This key leadership position plays a crucial role in the regional health system, responsible for leading teams to support systems in delivering improved quality, productivity, and performance for the region's population, in line with NHS and governmental priorities.

    Main Duties

The Chief Operating Officer will oversee monitoring performance against annual operating plans and constitutional standards. They will work closely with ICBs, providers, and systems to optimize their overall performance, reduce unwarranted clinical variation, and ensure effective resource allocation across the health service.

This requires high-calibre leadership to support commissioners, providers, and systems in delivering high-quality care in accordance with the Long Term Plan requirements.

The post holder, as a member of the regional executive team, will collaborate with the Regional Director to achieve NHS England objectives and provide professional support. They may lead or support initiatives set out by the Chief Operating Officer for England regarding commissioning or national frameworks for performance, intervention, and oversight.

    Working for NHS England

NHS England's board has outlined the top-level purpose: leading the NHS in England to deliver high-quality services for all. We will achieve this purpose by:

    • Enabling local systems and providers to improve population health and reduce health inequalities.
    • Optimizing digital technology, research, and innovation use.

    Knowledge and Experience

    • Significant senior-level management and leadership experience in the NHS or healthcare industry.
    • Senior leadership in delivering health and care transformation.

    Skills and Capabilities

    • Ability to build trusted relationships and wide support networks in a political context, influencing senior stakeholders, including local organizations, councils, and MPs.
    • Demonstrated capability to plan over short, medium, and long-term timeframes and adjust plans and resource requirements accordingly.

We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace that promotes diversity and values different ideas, perspectives, and backgrounds. When you join us, we want you to grow and excel, offering opportunities for your development. We welcome your talent and enthusiasm, regardless of age, disability, neurodivergence, sex, gender identity, gender expression, race, ethnicity, religion, belief, sexual orientation, or personal circumstances.

We have policies and procedures to ensure fair treatment at every stage of the recruitment process, including reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities and/or neurodivergent individuals.

Applications from job seekers requiring sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications.
