Description

We are looking for a proactive and enthusiastic Band 4 Tobacco Treatment Advisor to join the Gloucestershire Hospitals Tobacco Free Team.

The team is committed to working with patients, carers and staff across the Trust to treat tobacco dependence and support smokers to benefit from the huge health and wealth improvements of quitting smoking.

Joining the Tobacco Free Team will give you the opportunity to be part of a motivated, friendly and caring team who are committed to saving lives through reducing health inequalities.

It will also give you the opportunity to be part of a network across the South West with a shared agenda of tackling tobacco dependency.

We recognise smoking as a chronic, relapsing medical condition that can be treated, rather than a lifestyle choice.

The team works mainly with inpatients at the bedside during admission, but also with carers and staff, whilst promoting the Trust's smoke-free message to enable healthy hospital sites.

The Tobacco Treatment Advisor role is key within our service; you will use the unique 'teachable moment' of patients being admitted to hospital to have meaningful conversations about their health, develop treatment plans and enable long-term support to make positive changes.

You will also provide advice, training and support to staff across the Trust in our specialist area. Interpersonal skills, organisational skills and experience of using information technology are key in this role.

The post holder will assess and provide advice/treatment to individuals and groups of people to support them to stop smoking.

The majority of the time this will be for our patients, however in some instances it may be for staff or carers of people who have been admitted.

Specific training for the role will be provided.

Specifically, the post holder will:

  • Be responsible for delivering tobacco dependence assessments, stop smoking support and behaviour change interventions to patients at GRH/CGH.
  • Act as a smokefree champion promoting the smokefree message through their daytoday work.
  • Provide advice and support to clinical staff, including assisting in providing training on tobacco dependency.
  • Support the daytoday running of the Tobacco Free Team to ensure safe, organised and evidencedbased care is offered routinely to all identified smokers and provided to all that access the service.
  • Be responsible for accurate recording of service user information electronically throughout each day, to ensure that record keeping meets the required standards.
  • Work flexibility across a wide range of wards.
  • Organise own workload and work unsupervised.
  • Work independently with patients, within the framework of agreed protocols, recognising when there is a need to defer to a more senior member of staff for advice and support.
  • Ensure robust discharge planning for the patient's ongoing tobacco dependency treatment for patients wishing to quit.
Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the largest employer in the county, with over 8000 staff. We are one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK.

We offer a generous annual leave allowance, excellent bank rates, access to the excellent NHS Pension Scheme, discounts for local shops, restaurants and services, access to our health and wellbeing hub, access to our two on-site nurseries, flexible working options, discounted public transport, reward and recognition schemes, exercise and activity classes and membership to our popular hospital choir.

Main duties:

  • Carry out tobacco dependency assessments and develop personalised support plans including recommending treatments based on assessed needs. This could involve behavioural support and advice on Nicotine Replacement Therapy, stop smoking medications and ecigarettes. This will involve facetoface interventions in a variety of settings and venues across the Trust, including the patient bedside.
  • Provide information to people about stopping smoking, minimising harm from tobacco and healthrelated issues in line with the latest guidance and protocols.
  • Take and record patients carbon monoxide monitor readings.
  • Communicate smokingrelated issues in relation to an individual patient's care package in a holistic way e.g. working closely with maternity or hospital services. To communicate this effectively both to the patient and to the staff groups involved in the relevant context.
  • Signpost individuals to other appropriate services to further support their health and wellbeing needs.
  • Work with the multidisciplinary teams in the Trust as required and discuss treatment plans with ward and medical colleagues in line with protocols.
  • Deliver tobacco harm reduction / stop smoking support to specific client groups (e.g., preoperative patients, inpatients, outpatients, relatives/carers of people who have been admitted and staff).
  • Provide advice and support to ward staff in relation to tobacco dependency, including supporting them in their own smoking journey
