Job description


You'll work as part of a small team of like-minded people living and working at our vibrant and dynamic international summer school.


You will be based at Moorlands College in Christchurch, but the role means that you'll also join our excursions to popular tourist destinations.

You'll be in charge of male students and live with them in the male boarding house.

You will be given a full-time, fixed-term contract from Friday 30th June - Saturday 29th July 2023.


You will work for a total of 45 hours over 6 days each week, and will be free to leave the residential centre during your day off.

You'll be given a timetable and will be expected to work at various points throughout each day. You'll also have off-duty periods between shifts to allow you to rest and relax.

You'll report to our School Director, Ray King, and our Academic Manager, Matt Uphill.


You won't have staff reporting to you, but you'll be responsible for the welfare and wellbeing of the young people in our care.


You'll be paid £1,500.00 at the end of the contract, and will receive full board and lodgings in addition for the duration of your contract.


You'll also receive full pay for any holiday you accrue during your time with us, and will have the chance to opt in to our pension scheme if you're saving for your retirement already.


Duties & responsibilities


You'll live on site and throw yourself into every aspect of school life; your role will consequently be extremely varied, but your main focus will be on the welfare and wellbeing of the young people in our care.


You'll live with our students and be responsible for the students living on your corridor; you'll set up and lead evening activity sessions, and you'll travel with our students to famous and popular tourist destinations.

General duties


You'll need to participate in the induction sessions prior to the students' arrival, and be part of the airport transfer / school reception teams on arrival and departure days.


Your weekly duties will include leading activities, working with and supporting colleagues, supervising breaks, excursions, evening entertainment/activities and overnight boarding duties, including wake up, looking after one load of laundry per week for your corridor.

Activity programme duties

To help deliver the evening entertainment programme.

To prepare and lead activities, ensuring high standards are maintained in delivering the activity programme.

To complete and keep up-to-date the administrative paperwork as necessary, including end of first week reports and activity registers.


To ensure, as far as possible, that students participate and enjoy their activities and to maintain personal and student punctuality.

To begin and end sessions on time.

To participate in the Inset provision.

To be familiar with the contents of the Activity Leaders' Manual and to keep it to-hand for reference.


To be willing to be observed by the Summer School Director and engage in subsequent appraisal / personal development discussions during and at the end of the programme.

To attend meetings arranged by the Summer School Director.

To ensure that the necessary equipment is safely set up, used and removed, and is safely replaced.

To ensure that any space used for an activity is left clean and tidy.

Excursion duties

To work as part of a team to ensure the safe and successful delivery of the excursions.

To be responsible for a group of students and ensure regular checks and registrations.

To be aware of students' medical conditions.

Welfare duties


To have read and understood the Celc Summer School policy concerning safeguarding and child protection set out in the Summer School Employee Handbook.


To maintain student safety as a top priority and follow the Celc Summer School guidelines on health and safety contained in the Summer School Employee Handbook, and to have particular responsibility for the safety of students participating in the activity programme.

To be diligent in carrying out supervisory duties.

To become 'corridor leader' to a group of up to 14 students.

You are to take a personal and pastoral interest in these students, helping them to mix, feel safe, grow in confidence and build special memories.

You may also be called upon to work with the Summer School Director on any behavioural challenges evident on your corridor.

To carry out a minimum of 8 active on-call or patrol overnight duties during the 4-week course.

To wear the ID and Language School clothing when on duty.


Skills & experience


You won't need to have any specific experience of youth work, but you will need to be able to engage meaningfully with young people.


You'll need to be the type of person who throws themselves into every opportunity; you don't need to be the life and soul of every party, but you will need to be upbeat, positive, and engaging at all times.
