Senior planning officer (Enforcement)

About the role and what we're looking for


Main duties and responsibilities

  • Undertaking a full range of complex enforcement work and carrying out associated duties as and when required
- attending councillor site visits and presenting recommendations to the relevant council committees and forums as required
- preparing and presenting evidence for the council in respect of enforcement and planning appeals through written representations hearings and public inquiries as and when required
- undertaking specific projects within the planning service
- working with the policy team to input into policy development including neighbourhood plans for the district
- supporting and mentoring less experienced staff and any other duties as appropriate to the grade.


The duties may vary from time to time without changing the nature of the post or the level of responsibility and the post holder may also be required to carry out any other duties appropriate to the grading of the post.

- be able to give clear, accurate advice on procedure

  • Excellent strong oral communication skills and experience in giving succinct and wellargued presentations
- investigative, methodical and accurate approach to work
- ability to make assessments, recommendations and where appropriate decisions independently
- diplomatic, tactful and able to maintain discretion in difficult circumstances and build professional relationships with councillors and the public
- ability to deal with angry, upset, persistent and/or articulate customers
- good negotiating skills
- experience of using own initiative and carry out activities with mínimal supervision
- commitment to deliver service and corporate objectives
- an excellent knowledge of planning legislation coupled with the ability to interpret policies and planning law
- ability to work as a part of a team and support team members
- demonstrate a commitment to diversity and equality


Your essential qualifications
- a degree in a planning related discipline, or relevant qualification or equivalent level of experience
- at least five years post qualification planning experience and some experience of working in a local authority planning service
- hold a full and current driving licence and have use of a vehicle insured for business use or have the means to visit sites and attend meetings across districts
