Within our numbers, we have two of the UK's twelve emergency medicine professors; a former vice-president of The Royal College of Emergency Medicine; the Trauma Audit and Research Network research director; the Greater Manchester major trauma network's Clinical Director; and local leads for pre-hospital medicine.

Many of us have portfolio careers, with interests inside and outside of medicine including critical care, sports and sports medicine, ultrasound, research, writing and music.


Main duties of the job:


The Job

As a team, we:


  • Provide 8am to midnight shop floor cover for a busy adult emergency department with 84, 106, 128, 210 and 6midnight/on call shifts. A separate optional wellremunerated 11pm to 9am trauma shift ensures 24 hour consultant Trauma Team Leadership.
  • Are a paediatric Major Trauma unit with a separate colocated Paediatric Emergency Department. There are dedicated paediatric emergency medicine shifts with flexibility for a PEM consultant.
  • Provide support for a minor injuries unit staffed largely by advanced physiotherapy practitioners and nurse practitioners.
  • Have weekly clinical management team meetings and monthly consultant meetings.
  • Provide robust support for developing career interests.
  • Are actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate training and supervision, for which we receive excellent feedback.

  • FRCEM
  • Completion of a recognised training programme in emergency medicine.
  • To be formally recognised as Clinical Supervisor as defined by the GMC Trainer Standards

Desirable criteria:


  • Postgraduate training in education/supervision
  • To be formally recognised as Educational Supervisor as defined by the GMC Trainer Standards

Knowledge, skills and experience:


Essential criteria:


  • Experience of the whole spectrum of emergency medicine including paediatric emergency medicine and observational medicine.
  • Evidence of continuing personal and professional development and keeps up to date with medical advances.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the core legal, ethical and political issues which govern medical practice.
  • Understanding of the importance of evidence based practice.
