Description
The Scientific Cancer Lead is a core member of the Genomics Unit.

The post holder will bring together scientific, laboratory, service development and engagement expertise to help to prepare the NHS to harness the power of genomic technology and science to successfully embed the NHS GMS into the NHS including leading on the National Genomic Test Directory (cancer).

The Test Directory defines the testing available within the NHS in England and the technology by which it should be delivered and the broader genomic testing strategy for the NHS GMS, linking very closely with the other members of the Science and Laboratory Team and the Policy and Strategy Teams.

They will work with clinical and scientific experts to develop and oversee the process for evaluating new tests, ensuring the directory reflects latest technological developments and scientific advances.

The Test Directory is a central element of the NHS GMS, supporting fair and equitable access to genomic testing.

The post holder will need to work within a fast-paced environment to ensure NHS England's approach is informed by the latest evidence and meets statutory and regulatory requirements.

The post holder will report to the Deputy Director, Science and Laboratory in the Genomics Unit.

The Scientific Cancer Lead will deliver an effective service to support senior clinical colleagues, managers and staff across the NHS GMS and will:

  • Work with colleagues in the NHS GLHs GMS Alliance and Networks of Excellence to understand relevant procedures and processes, to identify challenges and to support change to embed the NHS GMS into the NHS;
  • Provide professional expertise for supporting sample collection, sample processing and analysis of the WGS data across the NHS GLHs;
  • Define current processes, facilitate discussions and advise colleagues as to how best practice might be adopted in the definition of future processes, document those processes as they are agreed and oversee their delivery;
  • Lead the standardisation of genomic result analysis, interpretation and reporting of nonWGS and WGS for solid tumours;

In April 2023, NHS England, NHS Digital, and Health Education England merged to create a new, single organisation to lead the NHS in England.

This new NHS England is designed to create a simpler, smaller, high performing, organisation that leads the NHS more effectively and is a better place to work.
