We have an exciting opportunity for a band 7a neonatal physiotherapist to work at the Trust, joining the neonatal physiotherapy service on our neonatal unit.

The post holder will act as an expert resource to the neonatal physiotherapy team and work with the team to develop services both for in-patients and out-patients.


You'll be supported by a welcoming and enthusiastic children's physiotherapy team and will work closely with the friendly and supportive neonatal MDT which will include a small team of Speech and Language Therapists, Dietitians and Occupational Therapists.

The level 3 unit at Southmead is a highly functioning medical neonatal unit with very good outcomes. We are looking for someone with expert skills and knowledge in early intervention and identification of at-risk infants.

The post holder will work with the MDT to promote and embed family integrated care models of care and will help in us reporting back to the operational delivery network leads on KPIs to evaluate the role and identify areas of service growth.

North Bristol NHS Trust provides services on its site at Southmead and at Cossham Hospital and the Centre for Enablement.

This post is wholly on the Southmead site.

Our NICU provides Tertiary medical care to local babies from Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire as well as to the wider SW ODN.

We work closely with the neonatal services at St. Michael's Hospital who in addition to medical care provide surgical and cardiac services to the region.

  • To work with the neonatologists, and neonatal nursing and AHP team to ensure a high quality efficient service to infants at risk of or with known neurological, neurodevelopmental, respiratory or orthopaedic concerns.
  • To work with the unit to ensure all infants receive developmental care and appropriate early intervention as indicated.
  • To act as an expert opinion in neonatal physiotherapy for therapy teams both locally within the Trust and across the SW ODN.
  • To engage with national neonatal groups.
  • To support and promote family integrated care principles and drivers to promote effective and evidencedbased working practices on the units.
  • To keep up to date with latest evidence and developments in neonatal care and disseminate information within the Trust as appropriate.
  • To identify and advise on the development of robust developmental followup programmes and advocate for the physiotherapy role in these clinics. To support staff already involved with any service improvements.
  • To monitor and evaluate treatment, measure progress, ensure effectiveness of intervention and identify quickly when treatment requires modification.
  • To support more junior therapy and other allied health professional staff, often in the most highly complex presentations, in the development of their assessment, treatment and clinical reasoning skills to ensure a high standard of care to neonatal infants and their families.
  • To provide accurate written records of assessment and input according to trust standards, including providing a high standard report/discharge summary as indicated.
  • To be aware of boundaries of own scope of practice and to effectively manage associated clinical risk at all times.
  • To work with the divisional therapy lead and neonatal OTs, SLTs and dietitians in developing and implementing strategic and operational improvements to the AHP role in neonatal care. This will include evaluating and measuring impact of the AHP roles on the units.
