Working within the Campaigns and Policy department, the Hunting and Captivity team are on the frontline of WDCs efforts to end the hunting and captivity of whales and dolphins around the world.

In this crucial role, you will be supporting the delivery of WDCs in-country campaign efforts aimed at changing hearts and minds within Norway and other cetacean hunting countries.

You need to be experienced at identifying opportunities to influence and persuade across cultural differences and have endless energy to positively and proactively engage with individuals and groups on the ground to create strategic partnerships so that WDC can facilitate change within counties.


Your duties and responsibilities:


Passion Seek every opportunity to end whale and dolphin hunting and their captivity**:

  • Have an unending drive to create positive change for whales and dolphins.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of effective strategies to end the hunting and captivity of cetaceans worldwide.
  • Identify how positive changes can be achieved by reaching a range of audiences, organisations and policy makers.
  • Be proactive in building relationships with individuals, groups, NGOs, political and industry stakeholders to encourage understanding which is sympathetic to WDCs goals.
  • Consistently strive to identify and promote opportunities and solutions that will lead to whales and dolphins living freely in their ocean habitats.
  • Be determined and driven to achieve WDCs goals, ensuring that output is effective and timely.

Integrity Identify and outwardly promote best practice, knowledge and science:

  • Maintain an understanding of social, legislative and policy developments relating to cetaceans and their environment, particularly those relevant to hunting and captivity.
  • Represent WDC in external meetings with individuals, groups other stakeholders.
  • Engage with national and regional governments where relevant.
  • Create collaborative relationships with political, commercial, NGO and other key stakeholders with the aim of achieving positive changes in policy and practice.
  • Write and publish papers, reports and other communications on the hunting and captivity of whales and dolphins and related conservation or welfare issues to inform and influence decision makers, the public and other stakeholders.

Inclusiveness - Collaborate across the organisation and externally:

  • Work together with WDC colleagues to plan and deliver hunting and captivity campaigns and advocacy to achieve policy goals.
  • Coordinate with WDC Communications and Fundraising teams to provide support and input which engages supporters, donors and partners.
  • Ensure that WDC campaigns are culturally sensitive and seek to bring the public with us to create a movement of people dedicated to the protection of whales and dolphins.

Skills, knowledge and experience:


You will have:

  • Knowledge of the cultural, social and political contexts across Nordic countries and understanding of the cultural sensitivities around the hunting of cetaceans.
  • A passion to protect whales and dolphins from harm and detailed awareness of how their welfare is affected by hunting and captivity.
  • Demonstrable advocacy skills.
  • The ability to successfully manage multiple responsibilities and projects at a time.
  • Fluency in a Nordic language.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal, relationship building and teamworking skills.
  • The willingness to selfmotivate, organise and prioritise with a busy workload.
  • Endless energy and positivity

You will have experience in:

  • Developing and implementing successful projects, campaigns or programmes.
  • Undertaking research into different societies and cultures to ascertain key insights, such as the drivers for change.
  • Managing your own workload and time and being assertive at seizing opportunities to create positive change.
  • Advocating for policy or social change.
  • Producing compelling campaign material.
  • Working in or with the NGO sector, ideally in animal protection/welfare or conservation.
  • Planning and overseeing budgets.
