We are currently looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual to work as our Ward Clerk on Elizabeth Ward.


You will need to have excellent IT skills and good communication skills, both written and verbal, which are essential to ensure effective working relationships between all multidisciplinary team members.


You will provide a comprehensive range of clerical functions to support the ward team in delivering a high quality service to patients.


There has never been a more exciting time to join West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Major redevelopment works are due for completion by 2025 or soon after.

These will be most dramatic at Watford General Hospital where up to 90% of buildings will be new.


The trust has recently gained 'teaching hospital' status which reflects the dedicated work of many teams and individuals who have set the standard for delivering high quality training, learning and education at all levels of the workforce.

As a Ward Clerk, you will be required to provide efficient and effective administrative support to the ward.


The main duties and responsibilities:


  • Liaising with admissions office to ensure that booking in of admissions runs smoothly.
  • To register, admit and discharge patients on Cerner system as appropriate.
  • You will be required to use the Electronic Patient Records system (EPR) to retrieve and update patient records.
  • To ensure a welcoming and efficient service is offered at all times the patients, relatives and ward visitors.
  • To maintain a good liaison with the ward team and other departments.
  • Ensure the ward post is sent to the post room and post is collected.
  • To record any statistics on the computer as requested by the Ward Manager of the unit.
  • Dealing with telephone enquiries and dealing with grieved members of public/relatives.
  • Reporting to the Ward Manager any complaints made by patients and/or relatives.
  • Ordering of stationery and supplies within the ward budget.
  • Observing and reporting to the Ward Manager matters of concern relating to either patients or the environment.
  • Assist in the prevention of accidents on the unit by reporting accidents/untoward incidents to the Ward Manager
  • To recognise a clinical emergency and know how to respond in a positive manner.
  • To carry out administrative tasks as requested by the Ward Manager.
  • To book transport for patients being discharged or transferred to other hospitals for appointments or ongoing care.
