Purpose of role:


  • To provide outstanding leadership to English Department, so that teaching and learning is consistently outstanding.
  • To ensure that all young people make at least expected progress and that ambitious targets for student performance are met in all Key Stages.
  • To continue to develop an innovative and progressive curriculum in the English faculty.
  • To performance manage robustly teachers and support staff in the English Faculty so that ambitious targets are met and there is a clear link between pay and progression.

Required skills:

Ÿ Education related degree is required.

Ÿ 2+ years' secondary teaching experience preferred.

Ÿ Ability to build rapport with secondary school-age students.

Ÿ Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Ÿ Demonstrable record of helping students achieve assessment test scores.


Key Responsibilities

  • To lead the successful delivery of English across the School.
  • To lead on literacy and reading across the school.
  • To inspire and enthuse members of the team, with a clear vision for the future direction of the English faculty.
  • To undertake regular audits and quality assurance checks within English to ensure that the highest standards are being achieved in all aspects of the faculty's work.
  • To attend, as appropriate, extended leadership meetings.
  • To safeguard young people by ensuring that all aspects of Health and Safety are adhered to in lessons.
  • To lead the development of differentiated schemes of work at KS3 and KS4 so each student makes outstanding progress in their learning.
  • To lead the faculty's strategic planning and selfevaluation processes.
  • To provide regular reports on student performance based on internal assessment data as well as externally verified examination results and to plan effective interventions as appropriate.
  • To promote and lead on the delivery of English.
  • To act as a role model to others, demonstrating high standards of professionalism in all aspects of leadership.
  • To coordinate the resources of the faculty, giving support and guidance to relevant staff.
  • To complete all administrative tasks in a timely and accurate manner.
  • To ensure that appropriate arrangements are made for examination entries and statutory requirements.

Curriculum Management to include:


  • To make sure that teaching and learning meets the needs of all students including those with additional needs, for example those with a low skill base, hearing or visual impairment and the very able.
  • To maintain an uptodate knowledge of new initiatives and incorporate elements into the English strategy as appropriate.
  • To ensure that all statutory requirements of the National Curriculum and independent school standards are met.
  • To incorporate assessment into all aspects of curriculum planning.

Performance Expectations:


Ÿ Be able to positively interact with all students and put aside prejudices and feelings in order to treat all students with respect, provide them with equal opportunities for learning and make them feel confident.


Ÿ Be able to create a safe learning environment that is conducive to learning and enforce rules consistently and fairly.

Ÿ Be capable of designing lesson plans to meet student needs and cover the standards.

Ÿ Be able to adopt various teaching strategies to effectively teach the curriculum.

Ÿ Be able to use effective techniques of assessment to monitor students' performance and identify students' needs through assessments.

Ÿ Be able to regularly review the effectiveness of own and other faculty teaching staff and assessment procedures and its impact on students' progress, refining approaches where necessary responding to advice and feed
