Description

The GI Surgery unit of YTH is active in research and has many in-house projects including that of FIT testing in colorectal cancer.

The unit recruits to many national & international trials.

The department has established links with the University of York and novel research work on aspects of colorectal cancer based within the university laboratory has commenced.

The collaborative project involves characterisation of sodium channels as a novel biomarker in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer.

The post holder will provide general surgery on call cover at CT level. The on-call rota will be 1:9. This is split into 2 shifts 8am until 8pm and then a separate shift of 8pm-8am. On call is supported at all times by the surgical registrar.

YTHNFT recognises the importance of continuing professional development and supports medical staff. There are good Medical and Nursing libraries available on both hospital sites. A permanent librarian is available and literature searches and reference articles are easily obtained.

The library at York has close links with the library services at the University of York as well as the University of York St John.


The post holder will be expected to keep themselves up to date with current knowledge and practice, to attend clinical meetings & teaching sessions within the department and to participate in audit & in-service training of other healthcare professionals.

The post holder will be required to deputise for absent colleagues from time to time and to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

The post holder will also be required to be available exceptionally for such irregular commitments outside normal rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
