  • An exciting opportunity has arisen within the South Wessex Fisheries, Biodiversity & Geomorphology team. As the Fisheries Technical Specialist in the team, you will lead and coordinate our fisheries input into a wide range of Environment Agency activities, including Water Company planning, flood and coastal risk management programmes, environmental permitting, environment programmes and Water Framework Directive activities.

We are working hard to create a better place and your expert knowledge of fisheries conservation and ecology with excellent communication skills can help us do this by proactively influencing everything the Environment Agency does.

This is a key role within the team and we are looking for a combination of personal and professional skills to help us manage the challenges within the fisheries environment.

Working with a wide range of teams both at a local and national level, as well as external partners, you will proactively identify and influence opportunities to deliver fisheries benefits.

You will provide specialist input into projects and programmes managed by others.

You will provide technical leadership and support to the wider team, as well as support for the team leader on the technical direction and priorities.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do.

You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team- The team cover Dorset and Wiltshire which contains a fascinating range of nationally important wildlife sites including the designated Hampshire Avon.

We work together to help conserve and enhance rivers, still-waters, wetlands, and coastal habitats.

We improve fish/eel habitats and passage, undertake byelaw creation, tackle invasive non-native species, reduce over-abstraction, improve water quality, promote natural flood management, and contribute to sustainable development.

The team have achieved long-lasting environmental improvements as a result of their efforts.

  • Experience/skills required
  • We are seeking someone with a passion for protecting and improving the diverse fisheries of the South Wessex rivers and still waters. You'll have a positive approach, a desire to work collaboratively and be dedicated to your personal and professional development which we fully encourage and support.

You will have well-developed communication skills, great customer focus and have the confidence to build effective relationships with external partners and internal teams.


You will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Thorough understanding of the ecological requirements of fisheries aquatic habitats and species management.
  • Educated to degree level in an appropriate environmental discipline, or minimum 3 years of relevant fisheries experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Water Framework Directive and other environmental and fisheries legislation.
  • Positive technical leadership qualities to coach/mentor others to improve their capabilities.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise effectively to maximise the delivery of outcomes.
  • Contact and additional informationThe role is based at Rivers House, Blandford office (DT11 8ST), with flexible working arrangements in place to support your work/life balance. This role does involve travel across the area and work in the field. A full UK driving licence is essential.
