Petroineos Refining and Trading is one of the largest independent refiners trading in Europe.

We are seeking x2 experienced Workshop Machinists to join our Offsites team based at our Grangemouth site on a Temporary basis.


Purpose of Role:


The purpose of this role is to provide safe and cost effective maintenance and repair support for company equipment that gives assurance for continued business operation and compliance with legislative requirements under PUWER.

Responsible for operating a wide range of machinery throughout the workshop as well as working with manual machines including Lathes, Mills, Drills and Vertical/Horizontal boring machines.

You will also use basic bench fitting skills.


This role involves machining a wide range of complex components including rotating equipment, valves, working to engineering drawings and reverse engineering using a sample provided and producing engineering drawings.

Working to a high tolerance of accuracy in metric and imperial using various measuring equipment.

This requires that components and/or general engineering items are prepared, measured, then repaired or fabricated in accordance with current engineering standards.


Key Accountabilities:


  • Examine faulty equipment, components and/or services in order to accurately diagnose the root cause of a fault and hence complete the appropriate repairs, and where possible, produce recommendations to prevent recurrence
  • Perform measuring and testing of mechanical components for size, geometry and material of construction using a variety of measuring tools and diagnostic devices
  • Execute Complex machine tool tasks on manual Centre 3 and 4 Jaw Chuck Lathes to manufacture or repair uncomplicated and complex engineering components
  • Carry out Complex machining tasks on the Horizontal Borer, Vertical Borer and Milling Machine
  • Carry out Straightness and Concentricity checks on machinery components using Centre 3 and 4 Jaw Chuck Lathes, Horizontal Borer and Vertical Borer
  • Be competent in the use of all other workshop machinery including but not exhaustive to, Pedestal Drill, Radial Drill, Bench Grinder, Reciprocating Saw, Surface Grinder, Slotter and Hydraulic Broach
  • Assist and support other members of the Workshop Maintenance team, inclusive of company apprentices/trainees, in order to achieve a satisfactory repair to machinery which should include accurately machining new parts for overhauls or machining existing parts to the correct tolerance
  • Manufacture component parts for Petroineos stores stock from existing technical drawings
  • Manufacture new and machine existing valve parts as per requests from the onsite valve specialists ( currently TEAM VRS )
  • Creating procedures/Rams when required
  • Cover at least one noncore activity. These include but not limited to Bar-Stock Controller, COSHH Assessor, PUWER Assessor, Manual Handling Assessor, Apprentice Assessor, Safety Rep

Special Features:


  • Flexibility required changing working patterns at shortnotice to accommodate unplanned outages
  • Periods of shift work required to accommodate TAR outages
  • Periods of secondment within other site teams. (TAR, Reliability or Maintenance improvement.)

Skill and Experience:


  • Formal machinist apprenticeship
  • SVQ Level 3 Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent)
  • HNC Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Ability to work to very precise tolerances
  • Capable of reading detailed technical drawings/diagrams
  • Selfmotivated and adaptable to changing work needs, environment or situations
  • Operate on own initiative when supervision is not present
  • Focused (safety, speed, quality)
  • Previous experience of a COMAH site (Desirable)
