Job summary:

The Wider Europe, Middle East & Central Asia (WEMCA) team in the Bilateral Trade Relations directorate leads the Department's trade policy engagement with trade partners across these regions.

This means removing market access barriers, implementing trade agreements and developing bilateral trade policy.

This role is as a team leader for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, focusing on Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.

However, we take a flexible approach and it is likely that you will have the opportunity to work on other markets across the Wider Europe, Middle East and Central Asia region.

Team leader roles in WEMCA are fast paced and stretching, with our work a high priority for ministers. The team has a collaborative approach at its core and you will not face any challenge alone.

Alongside a commitment to development and capability building, you will be helped to succeed by your peers and team - and you will help them in return.

The role would suit someone who prides themselves on their ability to lead their team as part of a wider group and sees collaboration as a key to delivering success.

Job description:

  • Leading a team of up to 4 FTE, working closely with the Grade 6 for the Middle East & Pakistan, and other Grade 7 team leaders across the wider group.
  • Working with the overseas network to identify and resolve market access barriers.
  • Monitoring and analysing partner countries' trade policy developments and interests to develop a strategy in line with UK trade policy interests, drafting advice to Ministers as required.
  • Working with policy colleagues in the Department and across Whitehall to develop UK policy, ensuring expert resource is deployed efficiently to realise opportunities and objectives.
  • Leading engagements with officials from partner countries.
  • Leading the implementation of the Gulf Free Trade Agreement, once concluded.
  • Contributing to an open and inclusive team culture as part of the group's senior leadership team.

Hybrid Working
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DBT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.

If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
