We are looking for a Workshop Fitter / Chargehand to carry out fault diagnosis, vehicle repairs, servicing and parts replacement within our workshop.

You will fully comply with all HS&E legislation, client's policies, and the relevant SOPs and should be able to provide assistance to other staff as required, communicate effectively with colleagues and superiors.

You will also maintain and develop technical skills as required and work on an extremely wide variety of vehicles including cars, light commercials, HGV's & tankers.

Also, on various plant equipment.


Key responsibilities for a Workshop Fitter / Chargehand:

  • To diagnose vehicle faults and specify the correct method of repair and parts to be used within defined quality standards and within the most cost-effective manner.
  • To carry out vehicle Inspections/servicing in accordance with the workshop schedule.
  • To record job times for the repair on the job card in line with current procedure.
  • To ensure parts replaced under warranty are returned labelled and in a clean condition.
  • To ensure all parts are booked using the correct procedure.
  • To ensure good housekeeping practices including general tidiness in the workshop and the return of all tools and equipment to their designated place.
  • To carry out routine vehicle examinations using hand held data capture devices if applicable, in accordance to SOPs and VOSA testing requirements.
  • To attend road vehicle breakdowns and recoveries.
  • To carry out vehicle road testing where necessary to determine specific vehicle defects or following remedial repair.
  • To partake in the winter maintenance standby duty rota

Success Measures:


  • All vehicles to pass MOT / PSV tests first time, and any that don't to be reported to the Workshops' Manager immediately
  • Ensure the workshop stock is managed correctly at all times
  • All equipment is repaired to current legal standards as a minimum
  • Customers are to be dealt with, at all times, in a polite professional and courteous manner. All feedback is to be passed to the Workshops Manager.

Skills and Experience:


  • Be fully conversant with the overhaul and repair of vehicle systems including engines, automatic / semiautomatic gearboxes, drive trains, compressed air systems, hydraulic systems, braking systems, steering systems, suspension systems, cooling systems and basic auto electrics.
  • Be fully conversant with the safe operation of workshop equipment including (if applicable) brake rolling road testers, tracking gauges, hydraulic vehicle lifts, pressurized oil and waste systems, battery chargers and starters, trolley jacks, scaffolding, pressure wash, digital smoke readers, headlamp alignment testers, hydraulic jacks and testing equipment, drilling machines, torque wrenches, pedestal grinders and general portable equipment (i.e. air guns, drills, electric and pneumatic hand tools etc).
  • Be fully familiar with all relevant diagnostic equipment including hydraulic flow meters, air and vacuum gauges, multi meters, temperature gauges, micrometers, engine and gearbox laptop testing equipment.
  • Have basic skills in gas and electric welding, burning and basic body repairs.
  • Attend vehicle manufacturer product training courses, VOSA vehicle inspection training and vehicle recovery training as required.
  • HGV / PSV licence
