This role is based Service Design & Delivery, which is responsible for designing and delivering services for Libraries & Collections that enhance the experience for individuals from across the King's community.

About the Role


Library Assistants contribute to the work of the Frontline Services team by supporting the delivery and operation of our first-line enquiry service across Libraries & Collections; enabling users to access our resources, services and facilities and maintaining library spaces.

Library Assistants act as an identifiable and welcoming presence for our users and have an understanding of the breadth of the library's work in order to respond, signpost or refer enquiries effectively and promote our services.


All grade 3 staff are assigned a placement brief within a particular team but may be moved across to a different placement brief elsewhere within Libraries & Collections in order to support service needs or your development.


All Libraries & Collections staff are encouraged to take responsibility for their own performance and development, through agreeing clear objectives, maintaining professional awareness and reflecting on own performance.

We expect all colleagues to role-model a positive, proactive, flexible and committed approach that encourages others.


You will be required to participate in frontline services as required, including contributing towards a rota for evening and weekend working.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract

Key Responsibilities

Take responsibility for handling customer enquiries, responding promptly and referring complex enquiries as appropriate

Ensure all work is carried out in a professional and timely manner, with appropriate confidentiality and sensitivity, maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of data protection and copyright requirements

Contribute to the development and improvement of the service, and associated service processes, through identifying and suggesting improvements based on user feedback, colleague insight and own knowledge and experience

Work collaboratively and flexibly as part of Libraries & Collections, supporting other teams in times of in times of high-volume activity

Placement brief for role in Frontline Services


Act as a visible and welcoming presence within the library environment, taking ownership of first-line enquiries via in-person or remote channels.

Develop a broad understanding of Library Services and the breadth of its work in order to respond, signpost or transfer enquiries to the relevant L&C teams effectively, and promote our services

Assist users in the use of self-service facilities, troubleshoot issues as required, and proactively alert users of service updates through appropriate signage


Maximise accessibility of physical collections through timely and accurate shelving and shelf tidying, and take responsibility for stock and circulation tasks, e.g.

reservation processing, stock relegation, book and article requests

Support new staff members through training and coaching, and contribute to the creation and revision of guidance and procedural documentation


Identify and resolve or escalate issues regarding building and maintenance, health and safety, security and wellbeing (of colleagues and service users) ensuring the library space is safe, clean & tidy, referring more complex situations to a manager or stakeholders.

Essential criteria
