Build Supervisor
Out of Hand is an established Design, Print, Distribution and Outdoor specialist based in Edinburgh and Bristol.

Working in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council we deliver the Outdoor Advertising scheme for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.


Out of Hand handles the entire scheme covering all aspects such as building temporary advertising structures, installing the advertising, maintenance and break down at the end of the Fringe.

We utilise over 800 sites throughout the city center and completely transform the city during the busy festival season with approx.

2.5million tickets sold in 2023.


The Role:


As Senior Build Supervisor you will work closely with the Operations Manager and Project Manager to organize the build teams and assign daily tasks, alongside the Installation Supervisor and other Build Supervisor.

Your role will involve checking and updating structure build notes and communicating with the Commercial Director to ensure customer satisfaction.

You will supervise the build/risk assessment-based intern to aid them in updating our Risk Assessments and liaise with the HR/Rota based intern to ensure you have the team numbers required for each week.


Duties and Responsibilities will include:


  • Lead the build training at the beginning of the project (after your own training). This will include instruction on Heras panel assembly, struts and stakes, ratchet straps, tool use. This training will be complemented by health and safety training led by the Project Manager.
  • Coordinate teams and assign each with a job list with the help of the Operations Manager each day.
  • Plan schedules and routes in advance to ensure maximum efficiency from the team.
  • Update build notes with any changes to structure design.
  • Ensure all risk assessments and method statements relative to the build activity are adhered to, up to date and fit for purpose.
  • Feedback to the Operations Manager any issues arising from requests from local stakeholders regarding structures adjacent to their business.
  • Use our software to record proof of posting, this may involve downloading apps onto your personal phone and using them to either scan QR codes or photograph structures and client artwork. You will be given tech training.
  • Day to day supervision of your own team as well as checking in with the other Build Supervisors. This includes ensuring your team is wearing company specific uniform and PPE at work.

Other general duties include:


  • Assisting with building and installing all the advertisement boards
  • Driving and helping with the distribution or delivery of advertisement material to locations in central Edinburgh
  • Assisting with maintenance of advertising boards and cleaning around structures and street furniture
  • Assisting with the project disassembly.

Desired Skills and Experience:


  • A full, clean driving license.
  • Strong communication skills Highly professional manner
  • An ability to build on and develop strong relationships.
  • A working understanding of Health and Safety and conversant with the creation of Risk Assessments
  • Ability to plan and manage a team's workload and tasks
  • Ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Understanding of Outdoor Advertising
  • Have attended and/or have a good understanding of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Further Information:

The Project will run from Monday 10th July until Friday 15th September 2024.

We will be running a 7 day a week operation and looking at running some night shifts this year.

Daytime shifts from 8.00am to 6.00pm. Evening shifts from 6.00pm to 2.00am.


Any evening work undertaken between 10pm and 7am will also equate to an enhanced rate of 1.5 times hourly rate.

Vehicles / insurance and uniforms will be supplied. Please bring your own steel toe caps.
