Job Summary

The post will include 2 specialist migraine clinics per week, supported by 2 specialist nurses, and offering an extensive range of advanced migraine therapies including monoclonal antibody infusions, botulinum toxin injections, nerve blocks and access to surgical neuro‑modulatory treatments. The post also includes 1 general neurology clinic per week. Once a month you will deliver a neurology acute liaison day. For 2 weeks per year all activity will be replaced with being the neurology consultant providing cover to the general neurology ward. General neurology and in‑patient neurology is delivered from the £400 million state‑of‑the‑art Brunel Building. The post-holder will join 30 consultant neurologists who collectively provide general neurology and a broad range of sub‑specialist interests within the Department of Neurology at North Bristol Trust (NBT).

On Call

The post holder will contribute to a 1 in 14 neurology on‑call service out of hours and, in order to maintain competence, will also provide approximately one day of stroke care within normal working hours.

Main Duties of the Job

• Communications and Relationships: Expected to have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues. Empathetic and sensitive to patients' needs, able to explain complex or sensitive information clearly.
• Responsibility for Patient Care: Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in charge and for proper functioning of the service, including administrative duties associated with patient care and running the clinical department.
• Responsibility for People Management: Expected to provide compassionate leadership to clinical teams, including multi‑agency teams within Primary and Secondary Care, supervising junior staff and leading by example.
• Teaching and Supervision of Junior Medical Staff & Students: Support the development of all doctors, ensuring a high‑quality clinical and educational supervision environment.
• Partnership Working: Work in partnership with colleagues of all disciplines, external stakeholders and service users to ensure the creation of a quality service.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications and Registration

• Membership of the Royal College of Physicians & registration on the Neurology Specialist Register
• Full registration with the GMC
• Specialist registrars without a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date

Essential Training and Experience

• Training in diagnosis and management of neurological disorders, including management of advanced therapies for migraine
• Minimum of 6 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Specialist Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent
• Recent experience & familiarity with UK hospital systems & practices (or equivalent)

Essential Management, Audit and Research

• Experience in audit projects and written reports; knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues
• Knowledge of political context within which we operate
• Evidence of recent CME / reasonable training progression at this stage of career
• Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit; ability to design, conduct and supervise audits
• Evidence of participation in audit and research; understanding of the role of research
• Proven teaching ability; willingness to undertake teaching of medical undergraduates & postgraduates; proven published outputs

Desirable

• Higher qualification (e.g. Masters, MD, PhD)
• Experience at consultant level managing patients with complex migraine
• Experience and training in delivering injectable therapies (e.g. Botulinum Toxin and nerve blocks)
• Completion of a general management course or programme
• Interest in medical management
• Experience in organising, developing local and regional services for movement disorders
• Creative & open‑minded thinking

• Experience in supporting care delivery via specialist nurses
