National Highways, formerly Highways England, have named Amey Consulting as a Design partner to support the delivery of the largest and most comprehensive renewals programme and Environment and Wellbeing Designated Funds that National Highways have ever launched.

The £3.6bn Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) enables National Highways to procure Design and Construction services across the Strategic Road Network for the next 6 years.


The role
Our Environment and Sustainability team provides strategic environmental consultancy services across transport, utilities, defence and local government infrastructure.

The team has a diverse range of skilled people with expertise in ecology, noise, air quality, landscape, arboricultural services, archaeology, carbon modelling, environmental assessment, environmental auditing, and GIS specialists, servicing the consulting needs within the wider Amey group.


We are looking to grow our capability in several areas following successfully securing the South West SDF contract for National Highways contract.

We view this Environmentalist role as a key opportunity to build, develop and lead our delivery of Environmental Assessments across all the projects in the Amey Consulting portfolio.

This role would involve providing input to DMRB topics including Biodiversity, Landscape, Cultural Heritage, Waste & Materials, Population and Human Health, Climate and co-ordinating environmental projects ranging from scoping reports to full environmental assessments.


In a typical week

  • Provide guidance on best methods and practice to meet technical and project requirements
  • Keep up to date with industry best practice and where, appropriate, brief junior environmental staff
  • Liaise with clients on technical matters
  • Advise on environmental aspects of projects including but not limited to environmental assessments, ecological studies, environmental hazards
  • Undertake environmental site visits, inspections and surveys, to inform project designers throughout multiple disciplines (structures, geotechnical, drainage, highways)
  • Prepare reports to respond to statutory bodies including the EA, Natural England and Local Authorities regarding scoping reports, planning submissions, environmental permitting and section 61 consents for projects
  • Opportunities to develop ecological skills in a collaborative team environment, if desired
  • Ensure compliance with Health and safety, Environmental and other appropriate regulations
  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment in respect of: development and resourcing; timekeeping; document review and authorisation; technical training requirements
  • Lead environmental designated funds projects from feasibility through to design, including Biodiversity, Landscape and Cultural Heritage

We want to hear from you if

  • Degree in Environmental Science (or other relevant degree) with 3+ years' experience delivering environmental assessment reporting within a consultancy environment;
  • Membership of a professional body or qualifications/experience leading to membership;
  • Experience of working on the assessment of infrastructure projects is preferred;
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary environment interacting with all disciplines in the environment team as well as design teams, clients and stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage budgets and resourcing ensuring project stages are delivered on time and on budget;
  • Experience and expertise using Microsoft packages; particularly word and excel
  • Good communication and presentation skills;
  • Enthusiastic, energetic and dynamic approach to people and projects
  • Forward thinking and interested in developing smart ways of working with teams to realize client and operational objectives
