Bootle/Cheltenham/London with flexible working options

A secure civil nuclear industry.

A safer UK.

Be at the heart of both.

The challenge
Often in the public eye, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is an evolving public corporation. Essentially, we're responsible for shaping and delivering the regulation of nuclear safety and security across the UK.

As a Nuclear Security Inspector specialising in Site Protection and Transport Security, you'll be at the heart of our work, building your skills and knowledge in an incredibly varied role.

The role

From the latest cutting-edge facilities to decommissioned sites, ONR makes sure the entire civil nuclear industry - including transporters - meets strict security standards.

It's fascinating work that requires a whole range of diverse minds.

Drawing on your unique perspective and background, you'll help to protect the industry from the risks of theft and sabotage posed by terrorists and others wishing to harm UK interests.

Day to day, you'll be assessing security plans, conducting site inspections and undertaking interventions to ensure regulations are upheld, providing assurance to Government and the public that nuclear materials and facilities are appropriately protected.

Much of your work will involve collecting and analysing a range of complex evidence in order to make balanced decisions.

You'll be in contact with duty holders and their teams, Government agencies, other regulators and international bodies, so the ability to connect and influence will be critical.

Ultimately, your aim will be to achieve the best possible outcomes through collaboration.

The person
With broad knowledge of security, you'll be a skilled professional who brings a strategic perspective.

You'll have worked in a high hazard industry (ideally the nuclear industry) and be familiar with operating in regulated environments.

Wherever you've gained your experience, you'll be up to speed on how to protect sites, people and transport against dynamic threats, but also on security culture, leadership and management factors.

And you'll be keen to develop your expertise by working in different specialisms.

However, what's really important is the ability to communicate clearly and openly. It's vital that you can express complex technical concepts simply and write concise, accurate reports.

In return, we offer a wide range of benefits to support our team, including flexible working options to provide work-life balance.

The rewards
We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £58,059 - £66,026.. Furthermore, you'll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits). Plus, you'll receive a generous holiday entitlement.

About us
ONR is a Public Corporation with a Mission to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations.

Our staff are drawn from a wide range of professional backgrounds with specialist inspectors to deliver our core business including civil engineering, radiological protection, human factors, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear physics.

And together they're involved in everything from assessing safety cases, inspecting nuclear sites, communicating our decisions, training new recruits and representing the UK and ONR within the wider international nuclear community.
