Environmental Health Officer (Newly qualified or graduate entry)

Hours - 37 hours - office base, on-site, hybrid working


The role

Qualifications
BSc (Hons) Environmental Health or equivalent

Certificate of registration of Environmental Health Registration Board or working towards


Duties and responsibilities

  • Carry out inspections, monitor and enforce appropriate legislation and implement good practice in relation to the approved work programme in:
  • Food premises
  • Premises for which the Council is the enforcing authority for health & safety
  • Premises to which environmental protection legislation applies
  • Domestic premises
  • Premises controlled in relation to animal welfare
  • Community Protection Warnings and Notices
  • Identify, escalate and support complex investigations and enforcement activities to Senior EHO's.
  • Investigate demand work and requests for service in relation to the standards of:
  • Food, food premises, practices and personnel
  • Places of work
  • Environmental protection
  • Housing
  • Private water supplies
  • Animal welfare
  • Respond to requests for advice and information. Produce reports on any activities carried out.
  • Attend or address public meetings, liaison groups, consultation and partnership groups and other related groups relevant to your work area to explain or present the work.
  • Undertake continuing professional development and maintain knowledge of changes in legislation, technology and best practice.
  • Manage and monitor own work activities and report progress to the Public Protection Manager.

Person Specification

  • Experience in legal and administrative processes involved in enforcement.
  • Experience in the investigation and control of a wide range of environmental issues and nuisances
  • Experience in the regulation of a wide range of installations regulated by the PPC regulations and associated legislation
  • Experience in the regulation of food premises and approved food premises the use of HACCP principles in food safety
  • Willing to assist in the delivery of all areas of Environmental Health functions
  • Experience of working with partners/other agencies to deliver environmental health.
  • An understanding of the role of the environmental health service in contributing to the public health agenda and in protecting and promoting health
  • Excellent IT skills with good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, IDOX software, and GIS
  • Demonstrable commitment to CPD (Continuous Personal Development) in Environmental Health
  • Ability to communicate and negotiate with contacts with authority, professionalism and confidence
  • Ability to accurately collect, interpret, record and produce information in written form, including the preparation and presentation of reports
  • Ability to undertake or contribute to promotional or educational projects
  • Ability to use own initiative and manage own workload with mínimal supervision and to make decisions within established policies
  • An understanding of the principles of quality assurance
  • Ability to demonstrate enthusiasm and determination
  • Able and willing to work outside normal working hours as the service demands and to participate in the Services Out of Hours Service
  • Ability and willingness to demonstrate the council's values and behaviours
  • Full current driving licence and access to a vehicle for work purposes
