Liverpool Clinical Laboratories (LCL) is seeking to appoint a substantive Advanced Practitioner Healthcare Scientist (Histological Dissection) within LCL. This is an excellent opportunity to join the largest provider of specialist histological pathology services in Cheshire and Merseyside.

Advanced Practitioners undertake a wide range of complex scientific procedures which result in the correct interpretation of biological samples.

Their decisions contribute to the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases, including cancer, and the investigation of other pathological processes.

They dissect the full range of histological specimens from all specialties (Category A-E) as required, and competent.


Together with a team of expert dissectors, the post holder will be responsible for ensuring quality practices are adhered to in line with ISO15189 and ensure training for biomedical scientists and laboratory technicians is prioritised.


Additionally, the post holder will collaborate with our consultant pathologists to assist with the training of medical specialist trainees where appropriate.

Key responsibilities


  • Undertake a wide range of complex scientific procedures which result in the interpretation of biological samples that contribute to the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases and the investigation of other pathological processes. They will dissect the full range of specimens from all specialties (Category A-E) as required and competent.
  • Responsibility for day to day management the Cellular Pathology specimen reception and dissection laboratories in line with all relevant accreditation and regulatory requirements.
  • Work with Senior Management to provide expertise within the service area.
  • Communicate using a wide range of complex scientific and medical terminology to clinical colleagues including pathologists, surgeons and radiologists ensuring full comprehension and appropriate action.
  • Play a lead role in the education, training and development of Biomedical Scientists and junior medical staff in the macroscopic description, dissection and sampling of specimens.
  • Play an active role in the service's training and education programme
Plays a lead role in co-ordination and management of collection of tissue for research purposes.

Scope of Clinical Practice


  • Independent interpretation of macroscopic biopsies and surgical resections (both benign and malignant) from the relevant specimens within the agreed scope of practice
  • Provides independent expert opinion to clinical colleagues to enable management of patient care and provides expert opinion to medical colleagues to determine treatment of patients.
  • The dissection knowledge and skills of this post is equivalent to a qualified Consultant Histopathologist and the Advanced Practitioner will be expected to be working to current Royal College of Pathologists best practice guidance.
Person Specification


Qualifications:


  • IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma in Histopathology Dissection
  • IBMS Diploma of Expert practice in Histological Dissection
  • HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist
  • MSc (or equivalent) in relevant specialty
  • Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science
  • Post-graduate management qualification or equivalent experience
Experience


  • Minimum 48 months dissection experience including benign and malignant resections
  • Competency assessments for RCPath specimen types (Cat A-E) in relevant specialties demonstrated
