The Role

The Specialist Coordinator role involves supporting students with a range of often complex learning needs, who predominately rely on AAC to access their learning and to communicate.

Students who use AAC need significant adjustments made to their access to the curriculum.

Each student is unique; the role of the coordinator is to support families, schools and other educational professionals in making relevant adaptions for our students to succeed in their learning and communication and to support the student's access to and achievement within the curriculum.

The role also involves more specific support in providing Specialised Literacy Programmes and Qualifications for our students and includes offering training to families, schools, and professionals.

The role will involve working with students and professionals across a range of educational settings, including teaching students who are educated at home; we have an education otherwise project whereby we provide individualised learning programmes for students in their own homes.

Areas of Responsibility and Specific Tasks:

  • Demonstrate and develop an understanding of the ways in which AAC/AT is used to access the curriculum and how it will differ from student to student depending on their ability levels and access needs.
  • Support teaching assistants in the use of AAC to access the mainstream curriculum.
  • Plan for, assess and work with students to help them access curriculum learning and make good progress across key areas of learning as outlined in their personalised learning plans and/or EHCPs.
  • Work with other professionals in supporting them on how they need to differentiate learning to meet the needs of our students.
  • Support teaching assistants (and our own inhouse resource developers) in creating resources adapted to meet the needs of our students, this may include High Tech and Low-Tech resources.
  • Carry out specific training sessions and undertake regular training in the field of AAC.

  • Support in the teaching, learning and development of our Qualification Programs.

The AAC Specialist Coordinator will need to keep up to date with changes in technology and opportunities that such changes might offer our students.

Also, changes in the student's needs in terms of access to technology will need constant monitoring and adjusting, as necessary.
