The role:


To direct, control and be accountable for Aspen's Underwriting operations; determining the strategic plan and execution in relation to underwriting within the Aspen entity.

Key accountabilities:


Strategy and Planning

  • Influences and shapes organisational vision and strategy into action and leads others to achieve positive results for the business, in line with strategy.
  • Directs others in the implementation of strategy and development of company structure to maximise business efficiency, achieve cost synergies and integration benefits.
  • Drives (and is accountable for) business performance through others, facilitating effective planning, control and support mechanisms to ensure delivery of the business plan in line with market and shareholder expectations. Benchmarking against strategic objectives.

Policy, Process and Procedures

  • Establishes and maintains a robust underwriting control framework to ensure Aspen and divisions within the respective entity:
  • Complies with all material legal and regulatory requirements
  • Adheres to relevant U/W standards and best practice.
  • Meets internal, regional and/or global internal reporting requirements.
  • Identifies and effectively controls their insurance risks.

Environmental Awareness/Customer Focus

  • Is accountable for the costeffective delivery of the underwriting service across the Aspen entity to contribute to Aspen's profitability.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with key stakeholders including customers, brokers, industry bodies, business partners, reinsurers and regulatory bodies to support constructive and mutually beneficial relationships.
  • As appropriate, represents Aspen's interests with the press and relevant internal and external groups and/or through participation in industry forums, corporate communications events etc., to promote Aspen's interests and broaden its profile within the marketplace.
  • Maintains awareness of market conditions in order to make informed underwriting decisions.

Technical Performance

  • Ensures leadership team's awareness of strategic direction of business and division to meet business objectives.

Skills & experience:


Knowledge

  • Extensive and relevant understanding of specific class underwriting and reinsurance knowledge.
  • Leadingedge knowledge of statutory/regulatory regime
  • Knowledge of business processes and strategic planning.
  • Good working knowledge of company systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of financial and actuarial principles to assess risk.
  • Thorough understanding of Aspen's Underwriting strategy and how this translates into operational targets and delivery.

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Able to manage conflicting priorities to achieve deadlines.

Experience

  • Specific professional qualifications (+ broad business qualifications) at a level of degree or equivalent qualification (e.g. ACII).
  • Qualified within own discipline with substantial postqualification work experience within related environment and/or specialist function.
  • Experience of successfully developing and delivering technical and operating strategy.
  • Experience of working as part of a senior team within a multinational insurance environment.
  • Experience of managing all aspects of an independent business function.
