Type of Full-time Hours: 16 hours a week position: X Part-time Start time: 8:30

Finish time: 17:30


OBJECTIVES:


To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients, as well as providing nursing assistance to Doctors and other members of the primary health care team as required.

Have the insight and competence to recognise and work at all times within the boundaries of safe practice, personal competence and the limitations of the HCA role, following agreed protocols with referral to senior nurses, GPs or the Practice Manager as necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Clinical duites:

Assistance is given in activities related to patient care as required by the surgery


Such activities may include:

  • Fit and remove ambulatory blood pressure monitoring using the relevant computer software
  • Basic wound/ulcer care and wound swabs
  • Weight, height, Blood pressure, temperature and pulse measurements
  • ECGs
  • Give advice about healthy lifestyles
  • Health checks using the relevant computer software, according to national guidance
  • New patient medicals
  • Removal of sutures
  • Request urine and swab cultures and blood test where competent to do so, using ICE
  • Take INR readings and use INR Star to dose patients, referring to senior nurses/GPs as necessary
  • Venepuncture
  • Vaccinate for influenza and pneumonia
  • Vitamin B12 injections
  • Urinalysis
  • Assist GPs when needed
  • Chaperone and assist patients who are being examined by other health professionals where appropriate

Administration:


  • Stock and expiry times of emergency equipment is checked on a monthly basis
  • Equipment is cleaned and maintained as appropriate
  • Supplies relating to venepuncture and swabs are ordered as required
  • Housekeeping duties are undertaken, including general tidiness and cleanliness in
GPs and nurses rooms and restocking items as required

  • Calibration of CoaguCheck and cardio check machines are undertaking as appropriate
  • All relevant steps are taken to sign off the computer whenever the workstation is left unattended

Communication:


  • A helpful and courteous manner is evident.
  • Confidentiality clauses in the contract are adhered to.
  • All patient interactions are dealt with confidentially and any confidential paperwork is dealt with in accordance with practice protocol.

Legal:


  • Patient confidentiality is maintained at all times
  • Emergency situations are dealt with efficiently
  • Health and safety regulations are adhered to
  • All paths and floor areas to include doorways are kept free of all obstructions at all times, to include ice, snow and other hazards.
  • All plug covers are in place at all times, floors are free of litter. Any spillages (including any body fluids) are to be cleared up immediately using the correct guidelines/procedures.

Personnel

  • Leave and holiday requests are filled out and submitted to the line manager at least 6 weeks prior to the first day of leave
  • Cover is provided for other members of staff during sick and annual leave
  • Return to work forms are filled out on the first day of return
  • Appraisal forms are filled out promptly and submitted to the line manager

Other

  • Staff attend all meetings when requested promptly and carry out subsequent actions.
  • All requests from senior staff are complied with
  • Training and other development is undertaken willingly (this may involve travel away from the practice)
