Job context


The Wolfson Institute of Population Health harnesses expertise across a wide range of population based research and education activities and aims to be an internationally recognised centre of excellence in population health and preventive medicine.

The Institute is organised into five separate research centres which, though complementary and following the Institute strategic plan, also have Centre-specific objectives and requirements.

The post-holder will work in the Centre for Evaluation and Methods (CEM).

CEM is a new and thriving research centre that incorporates a number of collaborative units who work closely together to deliver outstanding research based on their combined and complementary research strengths.

The Centre comprises of four units, including two UKCRC registered clinical trials units (CTUs):
Barts CTU and the Pragmatic CTU; the Methodology Research Unit; and the Health Economics and Policy Research Unit.


The post-holder will be based in the Health Economics and Policy Research Unit which develops empirical and methodological health economics research across disease areas, public health problems and healthcare systems to generate evidence that informs national and international health policy.

The group also provides health economics teaching and advice to students and professionals.


Job purpose


The post holder will contribute to projects in one or more disease/policy areas involving design, conduct and dissemination of health economic studies using prospective research study or routine data, decision analytic modelling, health outcome assessment methods and other evaluative designs.

Key areas include blood transfusion services, cancer, cardiometabolic conditions, mental health, neurology, orthopaedics, respiratory health, surgery, and public health.

The post holder will work collaboratively with other health economists, trialists, clinical, and other collaborators on project/s.


Main duties and responsibilities

  • Responsible, under the general guidance of a more experienced health economist for undertaking the programme of work relating to ongoing and future studies in the key areas of work.
  • Contribute significantly to research in the field of health economics, including study design, study implementation, data collection and analyses.
  • Undertake quantitative research, including advanced statistical analyses of large longitudinal cohorts of quantitative data.
  • Prepare reports of results for public presentations through seminars and conferences.
  • Publish the outcomes of research work in outlets of appropriate standing and influence (i.e. peer-reviewed publications)
  • Undertake literature and database searches for the research project, be able to interpret and present the findings of these searches to the research team and develop guidance and action. points based on results as required by the line manager/supervisor/PI.
  • Submit/contribute to proposals to funding bodies (including research councils, government departments, public and private sector collaborators) for the financial support of research;
  • Contribute to undergraduate/graduate teaching and academic supervision at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry;
  • Contribute to operations of the Unit, Centre, Institute and QMUL, as well as wider relevant bodies, such as learned societies;
  • Engage in the broader QMUL agenda (e.g. Equality & Diversity; Sustainability; Internationalisation; Widening Participation; Interdisciplinarity and Staff Development) in line with QMUL strategies and policies;
  • Participate in the Institute's outreach plans, developing links with, for example, community partners in the UK and/or overseas.

Salary:
£33,619.00-£47,414.00 per year
