Starting Salary:
£23,620 with the opportunity to progress to a maximum of £26,845 per annum


Hours: 37 hours per week

Job Duties:

Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies preserves and promotes resources for the study of Hertfordshire past and present. Do you have experience of working with archives and a love of local and family history combined with excellent supervisory and communicationskills and a passion for providing great customer care?

You will accession archive deposits, and add information to the CALM catalogue, as delegated by archivists. You will deliver promotional events, including group visits, and assist in document retrieval.

You will use ICT to provide services to customers andcarry out collections work including assisting with digital projects and promotion.


Approachable, confident and able to supervise both staff, customers and volunteers in a busy reading room, with excellent customer care and communication skills.

Experience of working with archives, with a good working knowledge of legislation and collectionscare.


An interest in and knowledge of archives, local and family history sources would be helpful as you'll need to be able to use a range of resources to carry out research, being able to sort in alphabetical and numerical order, including Roman numerals andhave great attention to detail.

Excellent ICT skills including working knowledge of archive collections management software to input archive accessions and catalogue data. Knowledge of CALM, image manipulation and digitisation software is desirable.

  • Able to prioritise your workload to meet deadlines, using your initiative to work effectively without direct supervision.
  • You will work regular weekends and evenings, and able to assist with learning and community outreach activities that may take place out of office hours.
  • Able to lift and carry awkward and heavy items. Specialist equipment such as trolleys will be provided where necessary.
  • Able to drive a leased vehicle to retrieve documents from our out stores and elsewhere
This role is varied and involves working with fascinating collections from 1060 to the present. You will support customers accessing our unique collections be responsible for supervising the archive reading room and local studies library
