The Opportunity:

Additive manufacturing of functional materials is promising to deliver 3D magnetic circuits to allow increased power density of electrical machines to aid in the electrification of our airways.

To process the soft magnetic material, eddy current limiting structures must be used, the shape of which will be best designed using a multi physics topology optimisation.

Due to the likelihood of small air gaps resulting from this optimisation, which have no mechanical access, support structures will not be able to be used.

Funded by the Royce Undergraduate Internship Scheme 2024 the successful applicant will work on a project to develop an algorithm to take the cross section of a component designed by multi-physics topology optimisation, and modify it in a way that it is possible to create using additive manufacturing without supports.

The algorithm can then be used in an iterative loop to allow functional materials such as soft magnetics, to be optimised for increased efficiency whilst maintaining buildability.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week).
