Are you a self-motivated Senior Controls Engineer with in-depth knowledge of PLC & HMI looking for an exciting opportunity to join a pioneering engineering firm?


Our client, grown out of academic foundations at the Bristol Composites Institute at the University of Bristol, is a ground-breaking clean-tech start-up aiming to turn carbon fibre into the green material of the future by developing a novel composite materialrecycling technology to full industrial scale.


They are in search of an experienced Senior Controls Engineer to join their team and help them solve key problems in the high-tech manufacturing industry related to cost, productivity, and sustainability of carbon fibre composites.

Key duties of a Senior Controls Engineer:

  • Develop PLC, HMI, and motion control software (Siemens + other proprietary software).
  • Responsible for all aspects of control systems design, from design of wiring schematics to commissioning, testing and final delivery.
  • Design, commission, and test electrical and software control systems, develop own testing regimes and schedules.
  • Emphasis on functional safety is essential, assess system designs against Performance Levels (PL) and Safety Integration Level (SIL) requirements and design control systems to meet relevant certification requirements.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve automation failures.
  • Develop and maintain process documentation such as manuals, user guides, testing schedules, written procedures and SOPs.
  • Assist the engineering team with R&D activities.

To be considered for this position, you'll need:

  • A relevant BSc/BEng degree or above in science or engineering.
  • A minimum of 58 years' experience in controls engineering, exposure to a material handling, production, or processing environment would be bonus.
  • Proven knowledge of Industrial Controls principles
  • Relevant programming experience in PLC, HMI, SCADA, and Motion Controller programming
  • Knowledge of electrical automation components and control system's wiring is essential.
  • Familiarity with applicable Engineering Standards, SOPs, H&S regulations, and CE/UKCE marking process.
  • Previous experience working with CAD packages (AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, EPlan, or similar) essential.
