Purpose of job

The Research Librarian position provides expert research support on a wide variety of legal, business and intelligence requests, in support of global timekeepers and internal business partners.

The Research Librarian is part of the global Research, Information & Intelligence team and must be able to work cohesively with team members to provide efficient and effective research deliverables.

As part of the wider Knowledge group, the Research, Information & Intelligence team at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner works globally, sharing some responsibilities between the UK and US teams.

The UK research team has strong ties within the legal departments, providing an opportunity to work closely with individual practice areas and build up expertise in individual areas, as well as maintaining a broader range of skills and knowledge.


The Research, Information & Intelligence team has a very strong reputation across the firm for the quality of its research and training.

In addition to assisting with legal research, the team carries out a significant volume of business research and plays a key role in supporting the firm's business development and pitches.

This role will be based in the London office, dependent on government guidelines.


Key responsibilities

  • Provides domestic and international, legal, business and intelligence research to support lawyers and internal business partners through customized research outputs
  • Actively participates in firmwide research initiatives requiring collaboration, coordination and innovation across multiple internal business units
  • Advise lawyers on sources and search strategies, delivering training on research tools to lawyers as required
  • Promotes the Research, Information & Intelligence team to the firm
  • Participate in regularly scheduled local and global research team calls, whilst proactively maintaining research proficiency across a wide range of complex online research resources
  • Develops and maintains current awareness alerts on legal topics, company news and topics of current interest
  • Assist with other ongoing projects and tasks as deemed appropriate
  • Provide cover for colleagues and assist with administration, when required
  • Assistance maintaining the print collections

Key Relationships
You will work closely with the partners and fee-earners.


You will also collaborate closely with the wider Knowledge Management (KM) department (Knowledge Lawyers and Central KM), as well as with Research, Information & Intelligence team members globally.


The team has a particularly strong working relationship with the Business Development & Marketing teams, supporting the firm's strategic initiatives.


Experience and Knowledge

ESSENTIAL

  • At least one year's experience in a commercial, professional services or legal information service
  • Experience of using library catalogues
  • Basic knowledge of copyright law

DESIRABLE

  • Active involvement in law library professional groups
  • Demonstrated expertise in corporate, legal and intelligence research techniques
  • Experience of editing intranets and/or websites
  • Knowledge of legal and business databases and a proven ability to develop a knowledge of new products quickly
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, written and verbal
  • Possess strong analytical skills, and the ability to communicate research outputs orally, visually, and in prose
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent IT skills
  • Ability to work well with people at all levels within an organisation
  • Ability to deal with pressure and manage conflicting priorities
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
