Summary


This role is to support the CUO Office with monitoring and managing enterprise underwriting performance, including sharing best practice and knowledge across underwriting and key support functions.

This is a non-traditional strategic role for a nearly qualified or qualified actuary and reports to the Head of Underwriting Performance.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Design and develop all aspects of the underwriting performance management framework.
  • Support the underwriting planning process. Review plans and identify opportunities to further optimise the enterprise portfolio.
  • Coordinate and contribute to the production of MI to enable effective gross and ceded performance monitoring and support agile decision making
  • Design sophisticated MI and performance monitoring capabilities
  • Establish consistent methods of assessing performance
  • Identify and analyse trends in key performance indicators, including technical analysis of historical experience
  • Work with the Data team to ensure complete, accurate and up to date information is available as required.
  • Monitor market cycles, competitor dynamics and changing risk landscapes.
  • Perform detailed market profitability studies making use of publicly available information, including financial statements and market publications.
  • Review competitor performance and analyse the key characteristics of top performers.
  • Evaluate external market data and analytics platforms. Engage with business partners and service providers to enhance data and reports.
  • Identify attractive opportunities to enhance the AXIS portfolio through both optimization of existing business units and growth into new products.
  • Manage detailed reviews of potential optimization / growth opportunities, consulting with experts from within AXIS and externally.
  • Take part in deep dive reviews in conjunction with other functions of lines that need remediation.
  • Perform other adhoc analyses as required to support portfolio management activities.
  • Contribute to the communication of conclusions of analyses to underwriting leads and senior management.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience in and perspective on best practices for underwriting performance, strategy development, business planning and risk appetites.

Other Desired Skills & Characteristics:

  • Familiarity with pricing, portfolio and capital modelling techniques is preferred but not essential.
  • Experience developing data strategies for performance management and portfolio steering / planning would be a plus.
  • Strong technical skills and attention to detail.
  • Highly computer literate, able to use spreadsheets, databases and learn the use of new systems.
  • Capable of developing and maintaining effective crossfunctional relationships at all levels.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to plan effectively and prioritise workload.
  • Ability to work independently.
