Locum Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine


Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine, based in the Department of Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) at Leicester General Hospital.

This is a less than full-time post for 3-4 days per week.


The post would be suitable for individuals on the Specialist register in SEM or within a 6 month period of obtaining a CCT in SEM.

Applicants must have MRCP, MRCGP, or equivalent, and be members of the Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine (UK). A comprehensive clinical experience of sport and exercise and musculoskeletal medicine is expected.

There are great opportunities for research and teaching. The University of Hospitals of Leicester is a major acute teaching hospital trust. Close links exist with local Universities and NHS Trusts. The post holder will be expected to supervise and train SEM Speciality Registrars based in the East Midlands and partake in clinical audit


The main duties will be the provision of secondary care Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) services to the people of Leicestershire including a significant number of tertiary referrals.

The post is suitable for individuals with comprehensive clinical experience of sport and exercise and musculoskeletal medicine. They will be on the specialist register in SEM or within 6 months of a CCT in SEM.

Leicester Royal Infirmary is home to the Trauma Orthopaedic service for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. 20 Trauma and 5 spinal Consultants offer a 24 /7, 365 days of the year service. Referrals are also taken from Northampton, Kettering and Lincoln for spinal emergencies.

The service has 78 trauma beds and a dedicated Fracture clinic seeing over new patients annually making the unit one of the busiest in the country.

The Trauma service treats all sub speciality conditions and has a dedicated spinal and Neck of Femur ward. The orthopaedic service is supported by dedicated orthogeriatricians who manage the complex medical needs of our patients.
