This is an exciting opportunity for a 12-month secondment/fixed term opportunity with #TeamNP and for you to play a crucial role as lead investigator in respect of unresolved homicide investigations within the jurisdiction of Northumbria Police.

This is your opportunity to be at the centre of complex investigations, delivering a high quality of service to victims of crime and bereaved families.


As well as managing Homicide and other Major Crime Investigations you will conduct formal reviews, maintain accountability for such investigations and reviews, whilst reporting directly to the Detective Superintendent of Major Investigation Team and to chief officers.

You will manage the investigative response, and all resources associated with the allocated investigation. Reviewing investigations and priorities to ensure that Threat, Risk and Harm are considered. Develop and implement strategies, procedures and systems that underpin the investigation.


What will I be doing?

  • Leading, motivating, and engaging large and diverse teams of inspectors, sergeants, constables and police staff, protecting and promoting workforce wellbeing to uphold professional standards and enable a high performing team.
  • Leading the analysis and evaluation of existing processes and practices within area of work in order to identify and implement opportunities for change and innovation, promote best practice and enable continuous improvement in evidencebased policing within teams.
  • Develop and implement short, medium, and longterm objectives within each investigation as part of the overall investigative strategy and engage with other force departments, units and agencies to enable a collaborative approach to managing investigative strategies and evidence gathering and build community confidence
  • Supervising and evaluating the performance and conduct of investigations for reactive, proactive, and crimes in action to ensure the investigation is carried out thoroughly and expeditiously in accordance with investigation policy, ethics and relevant legislation, and best practice.
  • Developing plans for operations and coordinate activities and initiatives, including management of covert assets, also implementing change plans where required, to contribute to reducing, detecting and preventing major and serious crime.

What do I need?

Essential:


  • PIP3 Accreditation.
  • Significant experience in conducting serious and complex investigations as Investigative Manager.
  • Awareness of HOLMES or Major Incident room standardised administrative processes for effective case management.
  • Experience/understanding of managing covert operations, including evidence of risk management and the deployment of assets, such as, conventional surveillance, directed surveillance and lawful intercept.
  • Knowledge of investigations of serious organised crime such as; OCG target operations, counter terrorism or corruption.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, policies, procedures and the Code of Ethics, criminal and common law.
  • Able to plan; to allocate work appropriately within the team and to identify and mitigate risks to delivery.
  • Highly organised with capability to manage multiple complex activities concurrently. Experience of managing parallel proceedings.
