About the role:

We have an exciting opportunity for an Interim Deputy Dean within the College of Science and Engineering.

The interim period will cover much of the forthcoming year (most likely through to April 2024) and will be focused on the College's learning, teaching and student experience.


The Deputy Dean will work closely with the Heads of School, Heads of Discipline and other senior managers within the College to assure the academic standards of provision (including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching on-campus, on-line and at partnerships), work specifically to enhance student achievements and to advance the student experience.

Collaborative working will be a key element of the role, so being able to work across the College's Programme Leaders and with Professional Services, in particular the College Registry Team, and Technical Teams will be a core expectation of the post holder.

As Deputy Dean, you will represent the College on committees and groups with particular focus on learning and teaching elements and student experience to ensure the College's voice actively contributes to developments that advance the standing of the University.


Principal accountabilities:


  • In collaboration with other academic areas and the Student Performance and Engagement teams with the Provost (Learning & Teaching) portfolio drive forward cuttingedge pedagogic practice, outstanding student performance and an excellent holistic student experience across the University / College.
  • Work alongside the PVC Dean and broader University Leadership team to develop and embed a culture of continuous improvement and innovation which aligns to organisational priorities.
  • Proactively seek opportunities in collaboration with the Provost (Learning & Teaching)'s Student Performance and Engagement Teams to innovate across the spectrum of learning & teaching, including the use of digital technologies, research and academic enterprise, using data and sectoral knowledge to inform insights.
  • Proactively engage with senior committees and groups across the university to allow effective, cohesive and coordinated delivery of key services across the institution.
  • Strategically develop relationships, pipelines and income streams to enhance third stream activity, collaborating across the University and engaging the Heads of School within the College.
  • Provide strong leadership to academics (taking direct line management responsibilities as agreed) developing a culture of ownership and accountability and maximising people potential creating a culture focused on outcomes and deliverables across the academic provision.
  • Take responsibility for translating strategy into operational plans which support the delivery of strategic objectives and key performance indicators for the College.
  • Support the PVC Dean in the achievement of financial plans for the College and manage the operational and financial planning and budgetary control for resources, including staffing and equipment.

  • College, identifying trends in student demands, anticipating emerging requirements using data and evidence based approaches and ensuring the promotion of employability, enterprise and inclusion across programmes
  • Lead in the validation of new programmes and continuous improvement initiatives for existing course provision across the College. Be a strategic link with Centre for Quality Assurance on matters of academic standards.
  • Ensure appropriate allocation of workloads within the College, developing and embedding appropriate utilisation of the University's academic workload planning processes/tools and the associated management information outputs.
  • Leadership of the effective recruitment, induction, management, development and appraisal of staff within area of responsibility in line with the University's HR policies and procedures, promoting effective people management practices that ensure staff are engaged and engaged and aligned to achieve effective outcomes in pursuit of the University's strategic ambition.
  • Maintain own academic standing and authority as appropriate, through teaching, research, innovation, enterprise and scholarly activities.
  • Develop and maintain an external profile. Engage with relevant national and international debates and with professional institutes, practitioner societies and governmental committees.
