Job summary This position is the Primary, Social and Community Care Clinical Lead for Greater Manchester Cancer Academy.

The Cancer Academy is a programme of work within the Cancer Alliances Workforce and Education programme and is the independent hub for cancer education across Greater Manchester.

As the hive of cancer education, the Academy supports the development of a sustainable lifelong learning model for cancer care across all care settings.

The programme ensures that our workforce is equipped with the skills and tools necessary to deliver the best patient care whilst supporting the delivery of the NHS People Plan and the Long Term Plan ambitions for cancer services.


The Academy will help to reduce inequity around accessing cancer education and provides a mechanism to standardise training, education and career frameworks for our current and future non-medical workforce.

The post holder will lead on the primary, social and community care aspects of the Greater Manchester Cancer Academy this includes closely linking in with the Cancer Alliance Clinical Lead for Primary Care, Early Diagnosis Team, and stakeholder engagement across the GM system e.g.

Primary Care Training Hub, GatewayC, Social Care Academy, hospices and care homes. The post holder is accountable to the Greater Manchester Cancer Academy Director and the GM Cancer Senior Responsible Officer.

The post is a fixed term tenure ending 31/3/25, for 1 PA (4 hours) per week. This post is open to medical and non-medical senior clinical leaders. Objective To provide Clinical Leadership and expertise in primary, social, and community care.

To support the development of the Cancer Academy strategic plan from a primary, social and community care perspective To lead engagement with key stakeholders across the three sectors to understand training and education gaps relating to cancer To collaborate with partners in the development of offers including but not limited to:

primary care:

in collaboration with the Cancer Alliance Early Diagnosis team and opening discussions with the Primary Care Training Hub and GM GP Excellence community care: in collaboration with the Strategic Clinical Network Community Educators Network, community nurses and GM hospice network social care: building close links with the GM Social Care Academy To support the Greater Manchester Cancer Education Collaborative and delivery of the agreed education principles to reduce inequity around cancer education in relation to primary, social and community care To provide support and supervision of the Academy GP Fellow with the assigned project during their placement.


The post holder will:

Work with colleagues across primary, social and community care to improve recruitment and retention through embedding a culture of lifelong learning Provide evidence and expertise to design innovative approaches to cancer education Champion the Cancer Academy as the independent digital hub for cancer education in a bid to reduce inequity of access Support the educational agenda for the flagship Greater Manchester Cancer Conference Engage with clinical leads across the GM system and at a NW / National level on issues relating to education and training Roles and responsibilities Leadership The Clinical Lead will: Have overall responsibility for the development and delivery of the Cancer Academys primary, social and community care educational offers Support the development and delivery the Greater Manchester Cancer Academy Strategy and implementation plan which feeds into a pan-GM Education Strategy Attend the GM Education Collaborative to assist with the the delivery of the agreed Education Principles and GM cancer education strategy from a primary, community and social care perspective.

Support the Academy GP Fellow throughout their 6-month placement and provide supervision.

Attend frequent meetings with the Cancer Academy Director, Senior Education Programme Lead and the GM Cancer Academy Programme Board, to review progress and objectives.

Keep outcomes that matter to patients at the heart of the pathway and its objectives.

Attend the Greater Manchester Cancer Clinical Lead forums.


Delivery The Clinical Lead will:

Work closely with the Cancer Education Collaborative to deliver the principles across the system and support the core team with objectives that pertain to the Academy.

Support the shaping and delivery of skills labs ensuring that they are relevant to the needs of staff working in primary, community and social care and staff within these care settings are aware of the offers.

Work closely with the Director of Cancer Commissioning and Early Diagnosis, GM Primary Care Training hub, GM Clinical Skills Group, and other key stakeholders to ensure skills labs are publicised effectively and aligned with other work across the system to reduce duplication, seeking collaborative opportunities where possible.
