Job summary:
West England Forest District is responsible for the sustainable management of over 36,500ha of the nation's forests in the west and south-west of England.
The District extends from the Shropshire Hills AONB south to the majestic oak and beech woods of Savernake Forest in Wiltshire and south-west to Idless Woods near Truro in Cornwall.
The District is managed from the District Office at Coleford, in the Forest of Dean, with a secondary office at Haldon Forest Park near Exeter, supported by ten remotely located forest beat teams and three recreation hub teams that look after the forests and woods on a day to day basis.
This post sits within the Learning team which consists of two Learning Rangers based in the central and southern parts of the district and is led by the Learning and Communications Officer who also covers the north of the district.
You will work within the district learning team to facilitate and deliver a range of high-quality learning provision and engagement activities across your geographical area to meet agreed objectives and to tell the story of Forestry England.
Job description:
This post is based at Haldon Forest Park, with blended working also an option. Post is non-operational (24 hours per week and may include some evening and weekend working).
This role will:
Raise awareness and understanding of sustainable forestry
- To engage with schools in targeted areas, working collaboratively with the Community Rangers as appropriate, to facilitate and deliver school harvesting visits, introductory talks and other outreach work.
- Promote Forestry England learning activities and products for visitors, schools and other groups to carry out selfled learning opportunities.
- To assist with the development of materials and delivery mechanisms for training purposes to improve learning partner and provider knowledge of Forestry England and the work that we do.
- Support the National Learning Officers to design and deliver formal education activities and informal learning materials (e.g. activity packs to accompany national marketing trails) for learners of all ages.
- Collaborate with Forestry England colleagues to deliver forestryrelated sessions to Sixth Form, Further Education students and adult specialinterest groups.
- Interact with our visitors in a positive way (either face to face or through digital channels) to help them understand and connect to our forests and woodlands.
Widen participation in woodland recreation for all abilities
- Facilitate learning activities for vulnerable or disadvantaged visitor groups including youth community and special needs groups.
- Attend local shows and events to support colleagues with site promotion and public engagement opportunities, including providing suitable resources and activities.
Increase our capacity and effectiveness through partnership working
- Support the Learning Manager with our Learning Partner, BFS, at Cardinham Woods through regular site monitoring visits, liaising with the local team and delivering CPD sessions.
- Attend national and local education events and conferences, including delivering workshops to promote Forestry England sites, downloadable resources, educational products and projects.
- Administer the national Children's University scheme, including providing the stamps for passports and accrediting Forestry England sites and activities.
Evolve our operational delivery
- Support the Learning Manager in monitoring, evaluating and developing the District's formal and informal learning programmes as required.
Invest in modernising our energy usages and reducing our waste
- To be responsible for engaging with the principles of the Forestry England's Environmental statement and being aware of negative environmental impacts and incorporating sustainable ways of working within your role.
Embed a safety-first culture in our teams
- To be responsible for working within the Forestry England's health and safety policies and guidelines ensuring that the health, safety and wellbeing of yourself and others is an integral part of how you work.
Use internal communications channels to inform the whole team on where the business is
