Job Summary

We are looking to welcome a Locum Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist to our cohesive and forward‑looking department at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, in collaboration with the South West Cardiothoracic Centre. The Trust provides secondary and tertiary care to the South West Peninsula, including a major trauma service and a comprehensive cardiac and thoracic service that delivers approximately 1,000 cases per year.

Responsibilities

The post is full‑time locum covering an approximately eleven‑week cycle. Main duties include:

• Consultant in charge of the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit for one week.
• Over the remaining weeks, attend approximately 20 theatre lists per quarter across Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, with coverage planned between the two based on experience.
• Provide flexible cover for theatres and intensive care as required.
• Cover colleague absences on leave in accordance with Trust policy.
• Contribute to the perioperative TOE service and support development of the surgical programme.
• Participate in medical audit, continuing education and maintain professional development.
• Teach, train, and manage pre‑/post‑operative assessment, departmental meetings, audit, and on‑call duties (approximately 1 in 11).

Person Specification

Essential

• CCT in anaesthesia (or expected within 6 months).
• FRCA (or equivalent).
• Broad, current clinical experience of adult anaesthesia.

Desirable

• Possession of a related postgraduate qualification (BSc, MSc, PhD).
• Advanced training or fellowship in a specialty area of anaesthesia.
• Experience managing complex cases.
