Description

We are looking for a Senior Clinical Coder to join the clinical coding department at one of the UK's largest acute NHS Trusts.

You will work with a team of peers to deliver the department's vision to provide efficient and expert coding of patient records, embracing national standards of excellence, enabling the Trust to optimise income, and enriching the data we use to understand and enhance patient care.

The coding office is situated at Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

The Senior Clinical Coder role can be office based, remote working (within the UK), or a combination of the two.


As a Senior Clinical Coder you will be responsible for extracting highly complex clinical information from the patients' medical record, then translating this medical terminology into a series of codes using international and national classifications.


Key duties of the post would include:

  • Ensuring departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) and targets are consistently achieved
  • To work autonomously without direct supervision when allocating work and in the achievement of daily coding targets
  • To be proactive, flexible and supportive towards an electronic way of working as the Trust develops its electronic patient record
  • To assist in the development of trainee and less experienced clinical coders
  • To be selfsufficient in resolving complex clinical coding queries and issues

The successful Senior Clinical Coder will have:

  • Hold the NCCQ
  • Significant experience of working in clinical coding using ICD10 5th edition and OPCS 4.9 covering multiple specialities
  • Experience of working to targets and KPI's
  • The capability to work efficiently as an individual and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication skills, with the aptitude to relay complex coding information to a range of people including other clinical coding, operational and clinical staff
  • Hold good IT skills


This role is only suitable for existing clinical coders who are already working at the above levels, using the listed classifications and who meet the criteria listed in the person specification.
