Description

Reporting to the Head of Estates and the Maintenance Foreman, the Multi-Trade Operative will carry out a range of multi-skilled tasks covering the following trades: Carpentry, Decorating, Brickwork, Plumbing, Plastering, Ceramic Tiling, Drainage works and Roofing.

The post holder must be able to work with heavy loads within manual handling Regulations.


MAIN DUTIES

Note:

Lists of activities are not intended to be exhaustive, but are indicative of the nature and level of duties and responsibilities which the post holder will be asked to perform.


  • Undertaking decorating and other general building maintenance work described on works orders, to a high standard of quality and in compliance with current standards and recognised good practice. The type and content of work allocated will be dependent on the post holder's qualifications and experience.
  • Ensuring that works are completed within defined target times.
  • Ensuring that all necessary documentation (paper or electronic) associated with carrying out the post holder's duties is completed legibly and fully, as required by the Department.
  • Accounting for materials and plant used in connection with works carried out.
  • Providing regular reports on progress and other jobrelated matters to the Head of Estates
  • Relaying requests for additional works from users to the Head of Estates
  • Assisting other teams within the Estates Department when required.
  • Carrying out daily inspections of hand tools and light plant to be used by the post holder, and reporting any damage to Line Management.
  • Complying with personal responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and associated legislation.
  • Driving School vehicles in connection with duties.
  • Participating in the Department's outofhours callout arrangements for emergency repairs.

GENERAL CONDITIONS

  • All operatives are encouraged to become multiskilled, and the job grade will reflect the skills that the post holder can bring to the School.
Examples of typical multi-trade tasks are included below, however this is not considered to be an exhaustive list of duties:

a. Build studwork walls, fit frames and door architraves.

b. Remove bath, clear away, fix new including chasing out and adapting supply and waste pipework. Fit new bath panel, fix new wall tiles and make good decorations.

c. Renew cistern, WC pan, hand basin, ball valve; general plumbing repairs (excluding work to heating systems).

d. Repairs to external and internal doors/windows, glazing, frames, ironmongery, locks, skirting boards, floor boards.

e. Remove kitchen units, clear away, install new kitchen including adapting supply and waste plumbing. Make good plaster, tile above kitchen units, redecorate.

f. Hack off and renew wall or ceiling plaster. Redecorate repaired area on completion.

g. Repair/replace cast-iron or PVC-u rainwater goods and external plumbing, including painting.


The post holder will be required to wear the uniform provided by the School.

  • The post holder must be willing to work overtime to meet operational requirements.
  • It will be necessary for the post holder to be trained in, and use, new technology and equipment as these are introduced. The post will be expected to consider all new training opportunities, techniques and courses made available.

CANDIDATE SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • City & Guilds Craft Certificate or NVQ Level 2 in relevant trade, or equivalent.
  • Current full driving licence (manual)
  • Able to competently carry out a full range of carpentry and other repair work
  • Good written and verbal communication skills; able to carry out basic arithmetic
  • Able to follow written instructions and drawings
  • Able to work quickly and safely
  • Practical maintenance experience
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Flexible and positive attitude
  • Commitment to providing a quality service
  • Able to use hand tools
  • Able to lift up to 25kg, and able to carry out physically demanding work
  • Willing to work in all weathers
  • Enthusiastic, willing to contribute as a team member
  • Selfmotivated, able to organise own workload and meet job targets.

Desirable

  • City & Guilds Advanced Craft Certificate, or NVQ Level 3 in relevant trade, or equivalent
  • First Aid at Work certificate
  • Willing to work outside normal working hours if required
  • Willing to participate in jobrelated training and development.
  • The School does not have a licence to sponsor migrants under the worker or temporary worker routes. Individuals who wish to work at the School will therefore need to hold or establish immigration status that allows them to work in the UK. The School is legally required to check that all successful job applicants hold the right to work in the UK before work can commence._

PACKAGE

Salary:
Roedean NTS Points currently £27,652 - £29,687 per annum)
