The role


Working as part of the Tax Centre of Expertise within the wider Finance Centre of Expertise (CoE), the role of the Head of Tax UK is to act as an advisor and point of escalation to the Tax and Stats Centre of Capability (CoC) which sits within the newly built Global Business Services Team and the local market Finance Business Partners.

Effective and efficient management of all in-scope tax activities remains the accountability of the local market Finance Business Partners.

This is governed by CoE, with the majority of the activities carried out by a 3rd party managed service provider(s) and supported by the GBS CoC function.

The overarching responsibilities of the CoE includes setting and communicating a clear and concise


strategy and framework of policies and guidelines, supported by expert guidance, advice & coaching, to be followed by the Global Business Services (GBS) Team and the Finance Business Partners (FBP) within the markets.


In particular the CoE is responsible for:

  • Developing frameworks & strategies for areas of responsibility.
  • Under those frameworks & strategies, developing policies, guidelines and setting standards for the FBPs and GBS to operate within.
  • Providing the appropriate risk management frameworks
  • Governing the provision of services of GBS and third parties.
  • Provides functional expertise and acts as a consultant and coach to Business Partners and the CoC to support tax optimisation and tax authority interactions.
  • Executing highly complex / specialist tasks and managing Board level interactions & requirements.


Further details of the role are defined below, but this is a new role established to provide the necessary resources and capability to support the implementation and continued growth of the CoE across all areas of international tax including M&A, financing and business restructuring projects, working closely with the Transfer Pricing and Group Reporting teams.


Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for and monitors all tax matters of all UK entities, abiding by all legal requirements and guidelines of the Tax CoE. Tax matters include corporate income tax, trade tax, withholding tax, real estate tax, real estate transfer tax, VAT and to a certain extent wage tax. Custom duties and tobacco tax are excluded.
  • Drives country level tax planning and strategy for new and existing flows, commercial and vendor contracts, and corporate initiatives.
  • Act as a trusted and proactive advisory board for the CoC to monitor UK legislative and regulatory changes; assess and advise management on tax impacts and practical mitigation strategies.
  • Supports UK related M&A activity through due diligence and integration processes
  • Build and maintain a trusted and proactive tax team that works collaboratively with the Tax and Stats Centre of Capability.
  • Identify tax risks and bring them to the attention of the Head of Tax within the CoE and the Board as appropriate and in a timely manner.
  • Provide tax support to the Tax and Stats CoC and Finance Business Partners outside of immediate responsibilities and country, as required
  • Responsibility, in conjunction with the Imperial Brands Head of Tax, for maintaining an efficient legal and financing structure for UK as well as maintaining strong relationships with experienced external tax advisers.
  • Accountable for the management of UK tax audits and controversy (including tax authority disputes, litigation and settlements) to drive efficient and timely audit resolution. Provide strategic insight into tax audit approach and process and consult with external advisors as required.
  • Deep knowledge of transfer pricing policies and close cooperation with the Head of Transfer Pricing.
