The Ophthalmology department covers not only the local community but patients accessing our services from other areas of Yorkshire and beyond.

The clerking team provides support to the ophthalmology staff and patients, welcoming patients to the department, scheduling appointments and working as key members of our multidisciplinary team.

Our clerk provides a point of contact for our patients working in a fast paced environment.

  • To provide administrative support to the ophthalmology service. This will include making and changing of appointments, dealing with DNA's in line with departmental guidelines and generating correspondence
  • To answer telephone and inperson enquiries from staff, patients and / or carers, communicating effectively where there may be barriers to communication e.g. visually impaired, hearing impaired, learning disabled, confused or aggressive.
  • To direct clinical queries to the most appropriate person
  • Ensure patients are booked into the appropriate clinic in the specified time scales
  • Booking of ambulance transport as and when required
  • To be aware of Medical Records policies and have a working knowledge of the Medical Records Library
  • To undertake administrative work relating to departmental audits within Ophthalmology Department
  • To be aware of and comply with HDFT policies and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines
  • To undertake mandatory training as required by HDFT
  • To participate in the appraisal process, taking responsibility for personal development and maintaining a personal development file
  • To undertake any other duties that may be required to assist in the efficient administration of the Ophthalmic Department


Staff within the Ophthalmology Department include consultants, medical staff, Orthoptists, Optometrists, Ophthalmic Photographer, Ophthalmology Clerical Team leader and nursing staff.

You will be interacting with patientsand working alongside medical Records Dept, medical secretaries,GP's,IT and ambulance services. You will be a valued member of our team based within the ophthalmology outpatient department.
