Description

Based at the Royal Brompton Hospital in Chelsea, you will play an active role in this busy and prestigious department, working between both the Medical and Surgical wards and will be involved with setting up and analysis of sleep studies.

You will also initiate patients on non-invasive ventilators (NIV) and also CPAP and be involved in troubleshooting any on-going problems.

You will actively participate in the follow-up and ongoing review of patients initiated onto CPAP/NIV therapy via face to face and virtual platforms.

You will have experience in the setting up/analyzing of sleep studies including oximetry, Transcutaneous C02, Respiratory Polygraphy, WatchPat, Actigraphy, scoring full Polysomnography's, MSLT, MWT, Osler tests etc.


Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Hospital is the largest heart and lung centre in the UK and among the largest in Europe.

In February 2021 Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust joined Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease.

The merger sees the creation of a newly expanded Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, with Royal Brompton and Harefield forming a new Clinical Group within the Trust.


To be able to, with training if required, perform and analyse all sleep studies including home sleep apnoea tests (NOX), transcutaneous CO2 monitoring, oximetry, respiratory polygraphy, full polysomnography, MSLT and MWT tests for inpatients, as well as virtual set up of sleep study equipment when required.


To be able to, with training if required, participate in the sleep CPAP/NIV roster to include virtual telemonitoring services and face to face appointments for initiation, troubleshooting and follow up appointments including a drop-in clinic, with appropriate reporting of the appointment (such as compliance reports, mask fitting and humidification).

This will be across a variety of ventilator and CPAP brands, models and modes.


To be able to, with training if required, perform and interpret blood gas (capillary) results, spirometry and SNIP tests as part of the NIV clinics.


To actively participate in the sleep and ventilation roster to include 08:00-16:00, 08:30-16:30, 09:00-17:00, 11:00-19:00, 13:00-21:30 shifts plus weekend work.


To participate in MDT meetings to discuss patients' therapy and diagnostic studies, as well as communicating and supporting other trust staff with use of our equipment and interpretation of results.

To be able to liaise with external clinicians and companies as and when needed under the direction of a manager.


To help with training of new staff in the department, assist in their inductions, as well as training to external NHS staff as and when needed.

To aid in service development projects and their implementation, as well as implementing trust and local agreed policies.

To support any equipment troubleshooting including returns to the manufacturer, or Baywater engineering company.

To be involved in the evaluation of new diagnostic and therapeutic equipment on the market.

To update departmental documentation, such as SOP's, competencies and guidelines, under the direction of managerial staff.

To maintain self and departmental development with CPD and appropriate training as agreed with managerial staff during annual appraisals.

To be able to handle direct patient care in domiciliary and acute settings, with appropriate respect, dignity and privacy.


To be able to escalate appropriately to the management team including chief physiologists, band 8a lead for sleep and ventilation and consultants as and when needed.

To complete all mandatory training as defined by the trust.

To work effectively as a team member with good communication skills.

To participate in a weekly stock check and report to managers for ordering.


To contribute to the continuous development of the Trust as a member of Respiratory Medicine and as a potential member of a range of Trust quality/process improvement project groups.

To demonstrate care and respect, for both patients and fellow staff members.

To deputise for the chief physiologists in their absence.

To be actively involved in departmental research projects as and when required.

To perform general administrative, IT and housekeeping duties as and when required.
