Full time starting salary is normally in the range £34,980 to £40,521 with potential progression once in post to £46,974

Grade: 7

Full Time, Fixed Term contract up to December 2027

Background
The School of Physics and Astronomy is a world-leading physics department, excelling in both research and teaching. Our physics research was recently ranked top in the UK for 4-star-category research, and 4th by GPA, by the Research Excellence Framework (REF Our REF Impact Case on public engagement was highly regarded.


The School's research portfolio is wide-ranging, and covers three principal themes: Quantum Matter; Particle and Nuclear Physics; and Astronomy and Experimental Gravity.

It has over 120 academic and research staff together with 120 graduate students with around 50 technical and clerical support staff.

The School delivers a number of undergraduate degree programmes:

Physics; Physics and Astrophysics; Physics with Particle Physics and Cosmology; Physics with Data Science; Theoretical Physics; and Theoretical Physics and Applied Mathematics (joint honours with the School of Mathematics).

These are offered at both Bachelors (BSc) and integrated Masters (MSci) levels. All degrees are fully accredited by the Institute of Physics.

The School ranks 4th for Physics in the Complete University Guide; 6th in the Times Good University Guide; and 7th in the Guardian University Guide.


Role Summary


We are seeking an enthusiastic Teaching Fellow to help coordinate and deliver the School of Physics and Astronomy's programme of Outreach and Engagement programme at Birmingham.


Main Duties

You will work with staff to:

  • Help coordinate and run events and workshops, liaising directly with our list of partner schools and other external partners and stakeholders.
  • Lead on the development and delivery of strategies to collect and assess data to evaluate the effectiveness of our activities (e.g., to support future Impact Cases for the Research Excellence Framework 2028).
  • Support our range of programmes including helping to prepare grants to capitalize on funding opportunities in the outreach and engagement space, including new opportunities in relation to Data Science. We are interested in building new activity around Data Science and AI; and
  • Contribute to teaching our own students.
