Job description:


The DESNZ Parliamentary Unit is offering a great opportunity to be part of an experienced, friendly and inclusive team, working on key parts of Parliament's scrutiny of the department.


The Parliamentary Unit provides a core function for the Department, part of Policy, Strategy and Private Office (PSPO) which works directly with and supports Ministers and their offices.


The team primarily does this by:

  • Acting as the gateway and first point of contact between the Department and the Houses of Parliament.
  • We support Ministers and their Offices by coordinating and supervising their parliamentary obligations.
  • We provide advice and training on Parliament and its processes to the wider Department to improve Parliamentary capability.
  • Acting as a centre of information and expertise on Parliament.
The Unit provides daily and weekly parliamentary business updates, and provides advice to ministers, private office, and officials regarding their interactions with Parliament


This role's primary responsibility will be to administer the department's written Parliamentary Questions (PQs) process, and the department's response to European Parliamentary scrutiny.


This is a great opportunity to work at the heart of the department, across the whole departmental agenda, and gain exposure to ministerial business and Parliament.


Person specification:


  • Written PQs
  • Commission PQ drafts to policy teams
  • Process PQ draft returns and obtaining clearance from Private Office
  • Process incoming and outgoing PQ transfers from other departments
  • Contribute to maintenance of the department's excellent record on timeliness of PQ responses
European (EU) Parliamentary Scrutiny- Administer the department's EU Parliamentary scrutiny process

  • Work with policy teams, the Foreign Office and the Cabinet Office to respond to EU Parliamentary scrutiny
  • Maintain a good relationship with the staff of Parliament's EU scrutiny committees
  • Contribute to maintenance of the good relationship between the department and Parliament's EU scrutiny committees
Wider Parliamentary business support

  • You will also take on additional supportive tasks to assist the wider Parliamentary Unit, within the scope of the grade, when necessary.

We would love to hear from you if you have an interest in politics and/or working around ministers and Parliament.

Experience working in or around Parliamentary business is not essential, as training and guidance will be provided.
