The Immunophenotyping Laboratory would like to recruit an experienced, specialised Biomedical/Clinical Scientist registered with the HCPC to perform the role of Operations and Quality Lead in our dedicated Immunophenotyping team within the Southeast Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (SE-HMDS).


This role carries opportunities to enrich leadership and organisational skills as well as enhance analytical and complex interpretive skills in a leading haemato-oncology service.

Training and development is a key focus of the organisation and one that is actively encouraged within the department and this position will promote and direct the learning and staff development of the team.


There are opportunities to benefit from an abundance of CPD activities offered at Kings and Synnovis including case reviews, forums, journal clubs, study days and pioneering talks from internal and external speakers as well as offer expert contribution.

There is also a keen interest in service development which is supported by various funds and collaborators as we endeavour to continue to provide a fit-for-purpose service to our patients.

This position also holds responsibility to assist the leadership of continuous quality and service improvements.


As part of a fully integrated diagnostic service, the post holder will work closely with the clinical teams as well as the other laboratories that make up the SE-HMDS; Immunophenotyping, Cytogenetics, Histopathology and Molecular.


The primary responsibility will be to oversee test delivery and compose Immunophenotyping reports for a spectrum of complex referral indications including measurable residual disease, ensuring that patients receive appropriate tests in a timely manner enabling rapid patient care decisions.

As Operations and Quality Lead, excellent communication skills, keen attention to detail, fair leadership and a strong work ethic is essential.

Well-developed prioritisation and time management skills are vital in this high throughput, fast-paced reference centre setting.

A key duty of the role is to provide leadership to the daily operations of the laboratory and the team as well as forward planning in collaboration with the Head of Laboratory and Principal Clinical Scientist.


This position holder will also manage the quality assurances of the department, working closely with the quality management team and head of lab.

Other duties include handling of samples and reagents, stock control, method/equipment validation, document control, audits, supervision, performance monitoring, maintenance and management of laboratory equipment and maintaining compliance to UKAS standards.


The post holder will act as deputy to the head of laboratory, leader to scientists, trainees and laboratory assistants as well as liaison to the clinical team and service users.

The immunophenotyping management structure also includes overseeing the SE-HMDS reception staff and operations.


The Immunophenotyping Laboratory at KCH, is a comprehensive haematological malignancy flow cytometry service which provides a spectrum of tests for diagnosing, prognosis and monitoring.

The department also forms part of the national PNH service and is fully UKAS accredited, supported by dedicated quality and clinical teams to ensure the highest standards at all stages of the diagnostic pathway.

The laboratory is staffed by specialist scientists with significant expertise in complex next generation flow cytometry. The team supports the staining and sample management for morphological assessment.

SE-HMDS is a regional centre for diagnostic services, covering most of SE-England with one of the largest myeloid/transplant practices in Europe.

It is expanding yearly and referral centres benefitting from the integrated reporting.

The immunophenotyping laboratory is expanding its test repertoire with novel assays to ensure optimal clinical service is provided.

The primary responsibilities of this post will be to provide leadership of operations and personnel within the Immunophenotyping laboratory and act as quality lead for the department.

This will involve aspects of personnel management and supervision, quality management and acting as a lead liaison between the departments that make up the SE-HMDS and haematology clinical team.

The post holder will also assist in the procurement, equipment management, liaising with the Immunophenotyping managers, Service Delivery Manager, Quality manager, Health & Safety Team, Procurement Team, Pathology Equipment Support, and Synnovis and KCH IT Teams as required.

In addition to the above responsibilities, the post holder will also contribute to the clinical work of the Immunophenotyping labor
