Description

The post holder will work as part of the General Surgical Team to provide a comprehensive Surgical service and will provide continuing clinical responsibility for patients under his/her care.

They will manage personal workload in such a way as to ensure that service contract levels are achieved and that work in excess of established contract is undertaken in accordance with the policy of the Trust.

The post holder will work with colleagues to ensure the Trust manages clinical care within the available bed complement and agreed facilities and contribute to the following:

  • Patient Safety First campaigns
  • Mortality and morbidity meetings
  • Clinical audit
  • To provide a comprehensive General surgical service providing optimum care for all patients
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all presenting patients
  • To work as part of the General Surgical team offering additional expertise in specialist area of emergency medicine and elective hernia surgery (including large inguinal hernias)
  • To provide on call service as part of a 1 in 8 rota
  • To share with colleagues responsibility for the daytoday management of the General Surgery Department
  • Teaching and training of junior staff and medical students
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
  • Experience of Acute Laparoscopic cholecystectomy service


The Directorate team are supported by an Operational Director, a Clinical Director, Head of Nursing and Associate Director of Midwifery.

General Surgery is within Care Group 2, and is supported by one General Manager, and a Triumverate team constituting the Clinical Lead, Matron and Service Manager.

The team are also supported by representation from Human Resources, Information Services and a linked Finance Manager.

There are currently 5 main theatres and 3 Day Surgery theatres.

The HDU/ITU Unit has 8 beds which include 3 ITU and 5 HDU beds. Staffing ratios for level 3 patients is 1:1 and level 2 patients 1:2.

The Endoscopy Unit, which opened in 2018, currently has four operational endoscopy rooms.
