About the role


We are recruiting a Head of Estates and Facilities to lead the teams responsible for delivering services to ensure all Blue Cross employees and volunteers have a safe, functional, and inspiring place to work.


Blue Cross has a varied estate of over 75 properties including retail, clinical, residential and offices across England and Wales.


You will be responsible for the strategic leadership of our Estates and Facilities, including fleet, from the design, development, and delivery of multiyear strategies to ensure Blue Cross continuously improves.


You will do this by:

  • Developing, directing, and controlling all aspects of the Estates & Facilities team to ensure that the service provided meets or exceeds both external statutory and regulatory obligations and internal performance and financial targets.
  • Ensuring the Estates & Facilities team are supported, empowered, and developed as individuals, and feel valued as part of the Blue Cross.
  • Championing efficiency, strong procurement practices and cost minimisation, working with colleagues to ensure we are delivering the biggest impact from our supporter's donations.
  • Developing and championing the organisation's approach to sustainability and environmental impact.
  • Developing effective relationships with other departments, functions, and suppliers, maintaining a strong customer focus where relevant
  • Ensuring all necessary arrangements, systems and processes are in place to deliver effective and timely reactive and planned maintenance where required and that local teams have a clear understanding how these arrangements operate and the corresponding SLA's they can expect.
  • Taking the lead as an environmental ambassador for the Blue Cross and working with colleagues to consider the environmental impact and sustainability of our activities.
About you


You will bring an exceptional track record of leading, motivating and inspiring a team in a similar sized organisation with comparable reach and complexity.

You will demonstrate a firm grasp of maintenance, development, and management of an organisation's physical estate, including both hard and soft Facilities management.


With experience of strategic planning in a multi-site operation, and used to working on a national scale, you will understand the importance of detail and technical specifications and be committed to change and continuous improvement.

While you may currently work in a national charity, a background in health, social care or housing could also have helped you gain the right skillset.

Impressive technical, professional, and contextual knowledge, plus high-level communication and influencing skills, will allow you to establish rapid credibility and rapport with your direct reports, wider teams, and the Blue Cross Leadership Team.

Essential qualifications, skills, and experience

  • Commensurate experience of leading a team in a similar sized organisation
  • Experience of developing and delivering of multiyear strategies
  • Experience of overseeing the maintenance, development, and management of an organisation's physical estate, including both hard and soft Facilities management
Desirable qualifications, skills, and experience

  • A formal qualification in Estate and/ or Facilities management (RICS / IWFM etc)
  • Project management experience and qualification (Prince, APM, etc)
  • Experience of managing an organisation's fleet
  • Submission of reports and experience of reporting to a Board of directors / trustees
