Description

To work as part of the phlebotomy team providing a patient friendly service to the hospital wards, outpatient clinics over a 7-day week.

The individual will be responsible for ensuring that the blood specimens are taken in a manner that does not cause undue anxiety to the patient and is of good quality for the laboratories.

Concentration, accuracy, and attention to detail are essential for this position.

The post holder will ensure that all relevant policies, competencies and Health and Safety protocols are adhered to, whilst adhering to strict Infection Control policies.

Effective communication to patients/their carers and healthcare professionals is essential.

Able to use initiative and act with mínimal supervision, whilst recognising when to escalate any issues of concern.

Assessing the suitability for the bleeding of children with complex needs (once paediatric trained).

To support Paediatric Assessment Unit as well as children from the GP surgeries.


An understanding of when to escalate to the phlebotomy co-ordinator of the day/Team Leader or Deputy of any concerning situations that may arise.

  • Providing a service to the wards at GWH.
  • Working with the healthcare teams on the wards ensuring that blood tests that need to be carried out are completed accurately and correctly.
  • Liaising with the ward co-ordinator/ward sister to gaincomplex and sensitive information about the patients to make a judgement regarding the patients that are a priority e.g. Those patients requiring blood done prior to discharge, time sensitive blood tests and blood cultures.
  • An understanding of the pressures that staff are faced with when working on the wards. You are part of a team that are at times going to be faced with potentially upsetting and challenging situations.
