The Role
We are looking to recruit Data and Information Specialists to join MI5 and MI6. As an increasingly data-driven organisation, data is at the heart of everything we do.

We are working to put data at the forefront, maximising our ability to make best use of data to inform decision-making.


As a Data and Information Specialist, you will work to maximise the exploitation of our data in a legally compliant way, making active contributions to our core business outcomes and organisational transformation.

You will routinely work with a range of interesting and unusual data, building on your existing knowledge to learn organisation-specific practices.


In MI5 successful applicants will join a team within the Data Office and may be able to represent the Data Office in different areas of the organisation in subsequent posts.

The Data Office has responsibility for areas including data management, information and knowledge management, policy and data governance. There may be line management opportunities depending on posting.

For both MI5 and MI6 you will represent the department and its aims, while supporting delivery of strategic goals.

You will likely complete a first role in a central team, with a focus on data, information or records management, to develop your understanding of the department's objectives.

You will routinely engage with others across the organisation, providing advice and guidance to ensure wider compliance and standards.


You will have a role in enabling digital transformation and work in an agile way where needed and remain adaptable to technological changes.

This could include managing a range of systems and ensuring that developments in information management tools and practices are implemented.


You will bring your existing expertise to help us develop and implement best practice, actively contributing to the development of our community.

You will engage with customers, providing advice and guidance to others, problem-solving to meet different requirements and helping to shape your team's approach.


There may be opportunities to contribute to the design and delivery of training packages, helping to provide assurance of best practice and meet bespoke training needs, as well as opportunities to mentor others.


About You
You will have a professional qualification in Data/Information/Records Management or Data Governance and/or a minimum of three years relevant experience in a Data, Information or Records Management role (e.g. working with Electronic Document and Records Management System (ERDMS), developing information policies, knowledge management).

  • Excellent problemsolving skills and the ability to capture, understand and deliver against customer requirements.
  • Taking ownership of work, working with initiative and limited supervision where appropriate.
  • Active desire to contribute skills and knowledge to the Data and Information Management (IM) community.

Training and Development
In both organisations you will attend an induction which will give you a general introduction to the organisation.

You will also receive a section specific induction with members of the team to enable you to learn the specific requirements of your role.

In MI5 you will move onto and accredit on a capability framework.

You may have the opportunity to undertake further qualifications, supported by the organisation, if relevant to role.

You will have a buddy to provide help and advice, both specifically role related and about the organisation.


Rewards and Benefits
You'll receive a starting salary of £33,350 - £35,534 (depending on skills and experience) plus other benefits including:
