We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual who is professional, reliable, innovative and flexible to join our friendly and hardworking Blood Sciences team.

The Blood Science department at Rotherham Hospital is part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Service.


You must possess a wide range of skills demonstrating good numeracy and literacy, a high standard of verbal and written English, computer/keyboard skills and attention to detail.

A degree of physical effort is required and potential applicants must be able to multi-task, work well under pressure and be able to work flexibly.

Ideally they will have experience working in an NHS Blood Sciences Laboratory.


The successful applicant will work as part of a team supporting both the clerical and laboratory needs of Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

Your duties will include, but not limited to, the receipt and booking of patients samples on to the laboratory information system, the movement of samples to the appropriate testing area, sample preparation, simple laboratory analysis and the despatch and receipt of samples to and from referral centres.

To assist scientific staff in laboratory activities.

Pre-analytical processing of samples to include the receipt, preparation and process.


To deal with deliveries and distribution of post, distribution and storage of consumables and handling/management of waste within the department.

To store, retrieve and dispose of biological material according to the relevant procedures.


Deal with direct queries from medical staff, nursing staff and other service users including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary.

Exchanges information with colleagues and service users, e.g. specimen requirements for laboratory tests.

Take appropriate action on non-conformity to standard operating procedures, e.g. minimum requirements for specimen acceptance.
